Product Review

Excellent Solution!

by   jchoefer ,   Nov 8, 2007

Pros:  Simple to use. Fast switching. Excellent software functionality.

Cons:  Shape/size of KVM could be an issue. Can be hard to find in stock.

The Bottom Line:  I would highly recommend this to anyone needing a simple and effective KVM solution for DVI monitors.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

After spending years with separate setups for my Mac and my PC, I decided to combine the two. After buying a nice 28" monitor (Hanns-G HG281DPB), I converted my Mac from ADC to DVI.

Installation was straight forward. Each of the computers is connected to the main unit via a pair of heavy cables of different lengths. One is about 18" long and the other is about 30" long. On the end of each cable is a DVI connector with yellow or green screw, a USB plug, and a 1/8" stereo plug. Both computers should be off while hooking everything up.

After the computers are connected, the monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers are plugged into the front of the KVM. Finally, plug in the "Flip" switch, and the power connector.

On the top (or maybe bottom) of the KVM is an LED that indicates which computer is active....Green or Yellow. In my case, the green light was on, so I powered my PC up first. Once it was booted up and I verified functionality, I pressed the Flip button and checked to see if the light was Yellow. Then I turned on my Mac. After it booted a window popped up asking me to confirm the type of non-mac keyboard that was installed. After following the on-screen instructions, I was up and running.

Changing control of the machine can be done in two ways. You can press the included wired remote, or, if you've installed the appropriate software, you can use one of several key press combinations to switch. Switching takes about a second, with the audio being nearly instantaneous.

The software also allows you to flip just the audio or video. I've used that feature to listen to iTunes on my Mac while working on my PC.

The shape of the unit is a little strange. It's pretty long and wider in the front than the back. This could be awkward especially since the monitor connects into the front. In my installation it's under the desk and out of site. With the 6' range of the wired remote, it shouldn't really be an issue.

The unequal cable lengths is interesting. One one hand it makes sense since you would probably be closer to one machine than another. It might be a problem if you have both machines under the desk and have to have the KVM on the desk.

All-in-all I am VERY happy with the unit!!
