Won't leave you looking like a Geisha -Bare Esentuals Kabuki Brush

by   uglybugg , top reviewer in Online Stores & Services at Epinions.com ,   Aug 18, 2006

Pros:  Soft bristles, the right tool for applying Bare Escentuals mineral products.

Cons:  Expensive.

The Bottom Line:  Bare Escentuals' best-selling brush. It works great for applying BE foundation and mineral veil.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I have been using Bare Escentuals products for many years. I first saw them on QVC and was greatly intrigued when I heard that they are natural and especially gentle on problem skin. I ordered the basic foundation which came with a long-handled brush with tapered bristles on the end. I never quite got the hang of using that brush with the "swirl, tap, buff" technique. The brush just didn't seem conducive to that type of motion, but I muddled thru it the best I could and managed to get fairly good results and coverage.

A few years later I ordered another kit that included Bare Escentuals foundation but also included a little brush called the Kabuki brush.

The Kabuki brush is small. It's only about 2 inches in length. The base or handle of the brush is made of some sort of lightweight metal, like aluminum or tin. The bristles fan out of the handle and resemble an old fashioned shaving cream brush but with much shorter bristles. According to Sephora.com, the Kabuki brush's soft sable hairs provide medium to full coverage. This is so true! What I couldn't accomplish with the long-handled, angled brush, I easily accomplished with the Kabuki brush.

I simply picked up a bit of foundation on the brush, swirled it in the cap, tapped off the excess, and buffed it onto my face, resulting in easy, even coverage. The rounded top and fluffy bristles are exactly the right shape and consistency to pick up the perfect amount of foundation and evenly deliver it to the places it is buffed. The foundation applied and blended evenly and completely with no bare or overly made up spots like I got with the other brush. I recently received a container of Bare Minerals Mineral Veil as a gift and use the Kabuki brush to apply it as well. The brush allows me to apply just the right amount of Mineral Veil as well and doesn't leave me with that over-powdered Geisha face that other powders sometimes give me.

Sephora states that the Kabuki brush is Bare Escentuals' best-selling brush and I can totally understand why. It's the brush for applying Bare Escentuals products perfectly.
I've had mine for about 3 years, I use it every day, wash it frequently and it's held up very well. To wash, I simply swish it around in lukewarm water with a splash of mild shampoo or facial cleanser and let it airdry on a towel on my bathroom counter. It does have a tendency to feel a bit dirty and greasy after a week or two so with my breakout problems I wash mine regularly to remove the oils and build-up.

At $28, it's quite expensive but with proper use and care it will last a long time. My personal recommendation is to buy Bare Escentuals brushes from QVC. If you search on QVC.com for kabuki, you'll find a set of 2 for only $33 as well as 2 other BE collections that include the Kabuki brush and a number of other BE products.
