Author's Review
I like games that challenge my son's mind. Games that make him think he's not thinking. He tends to shy away from games that are learning games, to him that's no fun. He wants car games that have cool crashes . With Babe and friends I figured I'd buy it. See if he likes it , what the heck it was on clearance for 9 bucks. It was the best purchase I ever made. Really.
Looks and Sounds
The game is actually pretty good graphic wise. It is limited of course because it is on the gameboy platform. However, for a two dimensional game it looks pretty good. For someone spoiled on dreamcast and the new Sony Playstation this may be the pits. But, for a 6 year old this is heaven.
This is a color game although it can be played on the older black and white gameboy as well. It doesn't take anything away from the game , just color.
The sounds are generally what you would expect from a gameboy game. That canned sound. It's nothing new though since all the games are limited in sounds with that background elevator muzak.
Details about the game & game play
Babe is a cute little sheep herding pig. He barks , he herds. This game gives Babe a chance to do more. Not just what captured kids at the box office.
To play you have to get the sheep to locations specified throughout the game, which starts out on the farm. These locations are revealed in messages that pop up when he approaches his friends. Babe has to use his herding skills to get the sheep to move. He steers them around through obstacles such as bales of hay , trees , water etc. He can also get the sheep to move by barking at them. Be careful though sometimes this backfires and they fall into water thus 'dying'.
Babe is not limited to the farm however and can roam about on other locations. Even the airport! This of course brings more things to conquer and is a bit harder to play.
To answer your question : Yes Ferdinand does have a cameo in this game. It just wouldn't be right if he didn't.
Is there anything else?
If you have a child that is easily frustrated, this might not be the game for them. It is hard for kids in the beginning. It takes a bit of skill , thought and luck. Since you have to manipulate objects in the game , it does make it difficult for the little ones. My son is 6 and does get a bit miffed at the game at times. Once he got the hang of it and started to conquer the game, he feel better about it. He then wanted to get further in the game, and try to finish it.
My son now loves this game. When I asked him what else would -he- recommend for people his age to play his answer(s) was :
Elmo in Grouchland
Toy Story 2
Rugrats
Yes, typical games that a 6 year old would like. But even being his mom I like those games too. Perhaps you might not if you don't have kids.
Enjoy!
