Kitchen Aid BCG100BU he's blue, stainless, and all mine
Date of Review: Nov 5, 2002
The Bottom Line: great grinder within a great body - doesn't get much better
It was during my "blue period"...or perhaps it was during the months of "stainless steel fixation"...whatever the time frame, this little grinder from Kitchen Aid entered my life and that of my little family. The attraction was purely physical - sometimes those are the best kind - and I intended to use this guy for all he was worth.
The attraction? Well (blush) I'll happily share this bit of inside information - he's dark and blue and brushed stainless steel. What's not to love?
It's a line...
Kitchen Aid has an entire line of these coffee grinders, so if blue isn't your thing, consider the oh-so-dapper red, the ever-sleek white, or perhaps the sophisticated onyx black. Me? Cobalt blue. The beauty here is in the ability to leave this gadget on the counter without ruining the 'look' of your kitchen. What? "I have no 'look'" you say? Never fear - consider the fact that this shade of blue will nicely hide those little pieces of coffee grounds that inevitably spill over onto the housing of your grinder. It will cover a multitude of errors.
Oh - but the power
All looks and no power make for a very dull grinder - and no one wants a dull grinder! The BCG100BU comes with a 200 watt motor, more than adequate for grinding the most stubborn whole bean coffee. The blades, housed within a stainless steel, measurement-marked bowl, are also of a durable stainless steel.
But I'm a safety gal
And since my grinding can sometimes occur when the children are in the home, I appreciate the fact that this one will not operate unless the clear plastic cap is in place over the top of the unit. The blades power up when pressure is placed down on the cap and they refuse to budge otherwise.
Ah, but then I have to clean up...
The entire top area of the grinder is dishwasher safe, while the motor housing and permanently-mounted blades can be wiped off with a damp cloth. Measuring about six inches tall, it stores more than easily under my upper cabinets tucked nicely on the counter in all its blue-ness, a beauty to behold.
How long will this one last?
Well, I admit to having my eye on the red model now - must be I'm moving on to my red obsession. And for the price of $29, I could add another color to the line, retire my blue grinder for a while, and employ a new color. Either way I know my coffee will be freshly ground when needed and my counter will still look decorative (as decorative as a kitchen counter can be)....
I have no complaints, I'm a happy customer. Will you have complaints? Well, if you're not a color user, have a "thing" against stainless steel, and find that grinding four ounces at a time is a drag - sure, you may not be as satisfied as I....but different strokes for different folks - and I'm keeping mine.
