Another Good Highlighting Product from Avery

Highlighting markers are an important tool for every home or business office. I like to have several different highlighting markers on hand for different highlighting needs along with an assortment of colors. One of my many highlighting makers is the Avery Hi- Liter with blue ink.

Avery Hi- Liter is a large marker that measures about five inches (13 cm) in length (with the cap in place) and .75 inches (2 cm) in width. The body of the marker is made from plastic and the cap is also plastic. The cap snaps in place to keep the marker tip from drying out and it can be inserted into the opposite end when the marker is in use, for easy storage.

The tip of this highlighting marker features a molded, chiseled design so it is capable of making marks of varying widths. Held at the widest angle, this marker will make a line up to three- sixteenths of an inch (4 mm) in width. The ink is sky blue in color and it has a sour smell. It is non- toxic and dries within a few seconds after touching the surface of paper or cardboard.

Avery is one of the foremost names in office supplies and practically every home and/or business office in the United States uses at least one Avery product. I first became familiar with Avery many years ago when I would use Avery products for making labels. Today, I continue to use Avery products and highlighting markers are among the many Avery items that I use almost every day.

Avery Hi- Liter is a large size marker that is makes lines of different widths that are easy to see through and dry within seconds. This particular Hi- Liter uses ink that is baby blue in color and it pleasing to the visual senses. It isn’t fluorescent, but it is bright enough that it looks nice on a piece of paper.

The barrel of this marker is made from plastic and it doesn’t have a comfort grip area. This can make it a little more difficult to grip if you use it regularly. I use highlighting markers for about twenty to thirty minutes each day so the presence of a gripping surface isn’t that important to me. But I can understand why others- those who use their highlighting makers on a frequent basis- will consider this a flaw in the marker’s design.

One bad thing about Avery Hi- Liter is that the ink will smear if touched too quickly. It won’t smear the ink on the paper that it is intended to highlight. But the blue ink from the marker will smear a little bit if it is touched immediately after use. It takes about five seconds to dry completely so it shouldn’t be too great of a problem. It depends on how quickly your hands touch the ink after it has swept across your paper. Avery has a newer line of highlighting markers that offer smear- proof protection but this marker isn’t one of them.

This highlighter emits a nasty, sour aroma but the good thing is that the smell is faint. Unless you make an effort to smell it, you won’t notice it very much. This is good because some markers have a nasty, chemical smell that can be detected from several feet away. There is no such problem with Avery Hi- Liter. It doesn’t smell good, but the scent doesn’t travel very far.

One other nice thing about this marker is that the cap can be left off for a long time without the tip drying out. According to Avery, it can be left off for up to one week without any adverse effects on the marking ability. I have no desire to test this claim so I will take Avery’s word on this. I have left the cap off of my marker for at least one full day without any problems so I can attest to that. But I will have to assume that Avery is being honest about the seven- day claim.

Overall, this is a very good highlighter from Avery. It features a nice shade of sky blue and a chisel tip for making different line widths. It doesn’t have a gripping surface and it smears only a little and only if you touch it too quickly. It isn’t the perfect highlighter but it is a good one and one I will continue to use.
