Avery Hi-Liter Desk Style Highlighter Blue Ink

I remember back in my university days coming across studies that indicated that for retaining information, certain colors of highlighters were superior to others. The fact that my preference was always for a color that wasn’t “optimal” didn’t change things. I stuck with blue. This guaranteed that I could always find a replacement at the school bookstore. They sometimes ran out of yellow or pink. Blue and green were always plentiful. At school as in the office where I work now, the Avery brand was the brand of choice for highlighters. My favorite is still Avery’s Blue highlighter. It’s bright without being painfully so. I find that while yellow and pink may stand out more, they’re also tough on my eyes.

The Avery highlighters have a chisel tip. Whoever designed this tip was very clever. Turned in one direction, it perfectly highlights a single line of 12 point text. Turned another way, it covers two lines of text. Working on one of its corners, it becomes possible to underline without highlighting material. The barrel of the highlighter is about a half inch across. This width allows it to stand on its own on a desk top if necessary. The cap snaps on firmly with a loud and satisfying click when closed properly. When the pen is in use, the cap fits nicely into a recess on the back end of the pen.

This highlighter doesn’t smear the ink when I need to use it. Whether I have to take something off the laser printer, copier, or something I’ve hand written I can be certain that this highlighter will not smear the words across the page. The ink is non toxic. It hardly has any odor.
Our office buys highlighters by the dozen. Each dozen costs between six and seven dollars. Highlighters can also be purchased individually for anywhere from 79 cents to $1.29. Look for coupons and deals. Since ink can dry out over time, even when the pen is not in use, I would only purchase what you feel you can use within six months or a year. Otherwise, you may find that you don’t get a reasonable life from your highlighters. As things stand, I get about two to three months out my average highlighter, and I use it a lot.

Since I now use highlighters not only to bring emphasis to texts, but also for time management, I’ve expanded my color selection. On my desk today, you’ll find yellow, pink, green, purple, and orange highlighters in addition to blue. I use blue on my calendar for social commitments (my favorite color for my favorite commitments), pink for work commitments, yellow for to-do items, etc.

When it comes to broad markers and highlighters, I definitely have opinions. I can go to the dollar store and get knock-off sharpies and highlighters. In terms of consistent quality, I prefer Avery’s products. They have never let me down.

And when it comes to Avery’s highlighters, my favorite has always been the blue ones.
