Author's Review
Although I've heard AutoWeek being referenced indirectly by other car publications such as Road & Track, I never had a chance to read it regularly until one day, I was forced to spend my airline mileage on magazine subscriptions and chose AutoWeek.
Now, I'm irreversibly addicted to Autoweek.
Timely and Detailed Racing Coverage
As a weekly publication, AutoWeek satisfies my auto racing addiction in a timely fashion. They cover most major professional racing events including NASCAR, CART, IRL, Formula One, Sports Cars (GT1, GTS), and others as appropriate. Sorry, no regular coverage of NHRA (drag racing), at least not yet. I can vouch for the quality of the race coverage - I've attended live some of the races they've covered. They regularly write features outside the event itself, like focusing on a driver, or a trend, which gives me a great perspective of the sport.
Road & Track readers have to suffer for months waiting for a coverage of a race, since it's a monthly publication and articles are written weeks before they are published. AutoWeek is the cure!
Car Reviews
Compared to magazines like Road & Track, Car & Driver, and Motor Trend, AutoWeek car reviews tend to feel brief, abridged. Doing a Road & Track style detailed road test is not their cup of tea, and performance afficionados may find the test data to be lacking. However, I find the quality of review to be appealing to regular car owners - I especially like how AutoWeek uses reader feedbacks and other magazine's reviews, along with summaries of Pros and Cons. Their style may seem familiar, almost like Epinions!
There are car publications that are biased toward certain manufacturers, while AutoWeek is relatively objective, at least that's how I feel. They don't seem to hesitate to jab at any car manufacturer.
News, Rumors, Other Gizmos
AutoWeek is a great source for the latest news and rumors in the automobile industry because, as you know by now, it's a weekly publication. For example, they reported Jeff Gordon's ex-chief Ray Evenham's departure from Hendrick Motorsports early and accurately. They also have a great humor column, with "fresh" punch lines, so to speak. (They were able to make fun of a spat between IRL's AJ Foyt and CART's Bobby Rahal while the news was still fresh.)
Besides the magazine, AutoWeek also has a web site, http://www.autoweek.com. They also have a free e-mail service, and you can obtain cool names like mustangfan.com.
Summary
AutoWeek must be doing something right as my brother, who's not too interested in cars, fights to read each issue before me! I enjoy the simple, to-the-point articles, but best of all, Autoweek feeds me the racing coverage I want, week in and week out.
