First of all, what I bought is D1812"PKG" model from Sam's club. It was $198 and the price was attractive for 8" model. Currently some 7" models are as low as $99 and but larger screen 8" models are not in bargain bin yet.
The "PKG" models has game controller and two folding headphones included.
Let me disappoint you first. You are looking a "BARGAIN" DVD player. Good performance portable DVD players are never priced around $200 yet. Whay you get for $200 is... like this. I will show you.
The screen has decent view angle. It is good to share by two kids seating side by side in back seat. But the real drawback of this bargain DVD class (not only this Audiovox) is low native resolution of the LCD screen. I think the pixel resolution is half of regular TV. The result is that letters and captions are hard to read and a general picture quality is very low. Quite disappointing for me.
But! my 5 years old and 2 years old daughters doesn't complain the picture quality as long as it plays Barbie's latest movie. For grown-ups, this LCD screen is a total disappointment.
I decided to return it and shopped A LOT OF electronics stores for a portable DVD player with better screen resolution at comparable price. No success. Anything which yields a true DVD quality picture is priced higher than $300. Because I don't like to drain my fortune that much for a kid's toy, I am keeping this Audiovox D1812.
If you are willing to pay $300 for for a better DVD player, go to Sam's and buy 10" model there. The screen is one of the best I have seen.
A good thing of this Audiovox D1812 is its internal speakers. Unlike many competitors, D1812 has nice speakers and the sound from the internal speakers are reasonably good for portable player. I don't want my young kids to wear headphones and watch movies at high volume because they don't have enough intelligence to find an appropriate volume by themselves. So powerful internal speakers are real plus for me.
The controls are not very intuitive and the resume play does not work if you turn off the vehicle engine and cut the power supply. The DVD title resume play only works as long as power is kept, either by car batter or its piggyback battery. But, you cannot attach battery when you open the screen fully to use in car(the batter and screen interferes) It means the resume play function is next to useless in car. Again, my kids don't mind.
I don't know... If my daughters are older, they may complain about this DVD player. But don't exclude D1812 from your shopping list. Anything you get for $200 is almost the same, "A DVD player for KIDS."
The included game controller is an ancient legacy. The game content reminds me of late 80's when I played video games... Looks like the game content is integrated in the controller body and it provides composite video signal to show through the LCD screen. The picture quality of the video games is horrible. It looks like TV program of a station 200 miles away.
The included NI-MH battery is a bit older technology than newer Lithium battery. But the weight and volume of the battery pack is competitive. The batter is not important if you are to use the D1812 mainly for in-car entertainment.
The folding headphones...you may know the answer. The fitting to head is not good and the sound is not good either. It may worth $0.5 each at its hometown China.
The package has a "Y" adapter to share a single headphone out with two headphones. But due to quality problem, the Y adapter does not hold headphone plug. Chinese should work harder to make it work. All the headphone issue is not a problem for me because I decided to use internal speaker.
The carrying bag serves as seatback holder of the DVD as well. It attaches to seatback with some strap length adjustment process. But it does not hold the DVD tight to car so that the player shakes a lot. Thinking it is not good for eyes, I throw the bag away and tied the player itself to front passenger center armrest console with thick rubber bands. It worked way better.
CONCLUSION: It works to kids only. Adult will be disappointed. But you may be out of luck if you try to find a better one for only $200.
