Product Review

I got a lemon

by   lisaml58 ,   Mar 29, 2005

Pros:  Can play lots of different kinds of discs. Easy to use. Big screen.

Cons:  Didn't work!

The Bottom Line:  If you get a good one this is a great deal, but don't be surprised if you need to exchange it a few times to get a usable one.

Overall Rating: 2/5 stars

Author's Review

After reading reviews on LOTS of different portable DVD players, I figured out that I probably had a 50-50 chance of getting a lemon no matter which brand I picked. So when I saw the audiovox 1708 on sale at BJs for 159.99, I thought "what a deal". It came with 2 sets of headphones (it has 2 headphone jacks) and all the cords you need, as well as a carrying case, that can be used to hold it on the back of a carseat. I was buying it to entertain my 3 year old on the plane, while flying to and from california (from massachusetts). When I got home I got it out of the packaging (a project in itself, as it came it that awful hard plastic with lots of heat bonded "rivets" to keep you from getting things out easily!) and tried it right away, so I could return it before the trip if it didn't work. Well it seemed to work fine. I breathed a sigh of relief and packed it up to take with us. I even bought a back-up battery, because the plane flight is about 5-6 hours total.
So we got up into the air and the captain said we could use electronic equipment and I pulled out our nifty DVD player and put in "Bear in the Big Blue house". It worked fine.....for about 5 minutes. Then the screen went all haywire, an old TV that needed the diagonal adjusted. I tried turning it off and on again, I tried a different DVD, I tried unplugging and replugging in the battery. Nothing worked. The only good news, was that the sound was still fine, so he could still listen to his Cds, which kept him happy until he dozed off. That night we tried completely removing the battery and then reattaching it (a "hard reset" as my computer literate spouse calls it). And it worked again!....for another 5 minutes. And so it went, the screen would work for the first 5 minutes after it was turned on, then go back to being "squiggly". I assume it would have worked fine if plugged in to a TV or monitor, but we didn't have to try this, as we were staying with people who had a DVD player.
So when I got home I returned it. I guess I'll wait another year or so before trying again, maybe they'll figure out the glitches by then.
