Author's Review
I recently bought this mic for my home project studio, and I am thoroughly impressed with it.
The quality of the build of the microphone is the first thing I noticed. It is slightly smaller than your average studio large diaphragm condenser, and is beautifully made. It comes with a shockmount, which works perfectly for vocals.
The features of the at3035 are outstanding. Judging from other microphones in the $150-300 range, the at3035 is definitely worth the more than it costs. Coming with a -10db switch, the at3035 can handle an outlandishly high SPL at 158 dB with the 10 dB pad. The low frequency roll-off switch also provides for more clarity in any situation.
I use this microphone through a Presonus BlueTube Microphone preamp into a Presonus FirePod, firewire to Apple's Logic Express. I have used it on every single track since I bought it. It is EXTREMELY versatile, able to be used on vocals, drums, acoustic and electric guitar, and any other instrument (shaker, anyone?).
Don't let me forget to mention that this microphone is tough enough to use live, and is perfect for live drum overhead application.
I am most impressed with the 3035 in the studio as a drum overhead. The entire set is picked up perfectly, without coloration. I finally could work with the crash and ride cymbals as I pleased, and the snare drum finally shines through perfectly.
I am least impressed with the 3035's ability to mic acoustic guitars. Though the recording is pristine and clear, there is a slight coloration to the tone.
The at3035 is an amazing microphone, at an amazing price. If you are looking for a microphone to move around everywhere, from instrument to instrument to vocals, the at3035 is a perfect solution.
