To Forgive is Devine ? but can it Atone?

Date of Review:  Jun 30, 2003
The Bottom Line: A youngsters misconception that changes lives and follows through the horrors of war and ends in the late 1990's.
Review: ATONEMENT

Ian McEwan , Londoner, has done it again. He has put together a powerful book that expands from 1935 to the end of the twentieth century. I avoid most modern day British authors – (I hope my British Son-In-Law doesn't read this)...

A Few Problems with England's Favorite Novelist

Date of Review:  Jul 16, 2002
The Bottom Line: This is highly literate and intelligent writing. It's a fascinating story premise and idea. I disagree with the focus and the way in which the Author told it, though.
Review: English Author Ian McEwan's novel, "Atonement" focuses heavily on World War 2. Unfortunately, the back flap of the novel doesn't tell you this. I would have liked to be forewarned as I am not a fan of war stories and novels that heavily emphasize...

Powerful Story of Love, Loss and Redemption

Date of Review:  May 20, 2008
The Bottom Line: Almost a family saga, "Atonement" is a well-written story of love, loss and redemption and the lessons we learn along the way.
Review: My Opinion

This is the first book by Ian McEwan that I have read. I tend to read dry historical accounts, or, if I feel wild, historical fiction. I wanted to read "Atonement" before I actually saw the film, as books tend to be better than...

A Punishment To My Eyes

Date of Review:  Feb 21, 2003
The Bottom Line: It's difficult to get into and hard to stay awake for.
Review: Ian McEwan's Atonement is the kind of book that old ladies gush about, praising its lyrical, poetic quality and vivid capture of the fall of Dunkirk in WWII. But two chapters into the book, I realized I was merely staring at the words on the page...

Atonement: The Novel

Date of Review:  Jan 17, 2008
The Bottom Line: A literary masterpiece that will fully engage you, move you, and challenge the way you think about writing.
Review: On the hottest day of the year 1935, 13-year-old Briony witnesses a scene by the fountain in the garden between her elder sister, Cecilia (Cee) and Robbie. Both Cee and Robbie are down from Cambridge, and the former had barely acknowledged the...

Worthy of its Booker nomination

Date of Review:  Jan 9, 2002
The Bottom Line: For its deadly accurate representation of the thought processes and motivations of 3 interconnected individuals, I would recommend this to all readers.
Review: This is the second of McEwan's novels I have read, following "Enduring Love" and I am rapidly becoming a fan.

At first sight this book is very different to Enduring Love in that it is a period piece set in 1930s England featuring an...

I forgive you for not having read Ian McEwan's Atonement

Date of Review:  Dec 20, 2007
The Bottom Line: can be forgiven.
Review: Speaking as a writer, editorialization can be one of the most difficult aspects of penmanship. Just when can an author hint at or even frankly state the themes of his or her novel? Can nothing be said? Can everything be said, only in the closing...

Atonement ....

Date of Review:  Apr 15, 2002
The Bottom Line: just read this book if you like the chronicling of lives, war time description, and great endings!
Review: Summary
Ian McEwan's tale of a woman trying to atone for a horrible act she committed as a young girl is spellbinding. His language is poetic and sticks in your mind after you put the book down. Intricately plotted but not overdone 'Atonement'...

"Shut Up, Mom, I'm Atoning!"

Date of Review:  Oct 25, 2002
The Bottom Line: Challenging but rewarding book doesn't pull its punches. Don't go in expecting a neatly-wrapped-up, cheery ending: this one is just as sad as real life is.
Review: When I was about twelve, some friends and I decided to amuse ourselves by inventing a secret admirer for a geek and social pariah of our acquaintance. We composed perfumed love letters, full of romance-novel phrases we barely understood, and left...

Mixed Feelings

Date of Review:  Jun 3, 2009
The Bottom Line: You may love it, you may not.  If you don't like stories where things aren't resolved in a satisfactory way, it will leave you feeling unfulfilled.
Review: A modern novelist could no more write characters and plots than a modern composer could write a Mozart symphony.  It was thought, perception, sensations that interested her, the conscious mind as a river through time, and how to represent its onward...
