Just When I Thought Disney Had Lost it

Atlantis, the Empire that "sank into the sea in a day and a night" according to Plato. We have many written references to Atlantis. But, to this day, it remains one of the greatest mysteries of our world. Some believe that their technology was even more advanced than ours.

Our great explorer Milo Tatch (Michael J. Fox) has heard the stories all his life from his adventurer father. He's spent his life researching it. So, when a rich friend of his fathers gives him a sub and crew, off he goes on his very own adventure. But, he discoveries the subtle difference between research and exploring, the people. His people skills come under fire. Especially form their Chief Mechanic, Audrey Ramirez (Jacqueline Obradas).

This part of the movie is different and new for Disney animated movies. Most of their animated movies have characters that are as deep as a 3 year old. These characters have a few more layers. This is why it will appeal to adults that enjoy animated films but have not enjoyed Disney's immaturish style.

Of course, they get to Atlantis. But, instead of ruins, find a populated city. Suddenly, Commander Rourkes' (James Garner) true motive comes to light. Atlantis has an awesome power source. It will fetch a high price. But, the Atlantians will die without it.

There is a gun fight and people die. So, adults may want to take this into consideration before taking their kids to see it. But, as I said before, Disney is vying for a more grown up audience.

The voice overs are great. They really took the time to fit the voices with the characters. The humor can be a little dry at times. And, there is great word play in a couple of scenes. The adults will get the jokes. The kids will get the word play. Also, this is not the musical type animation film that Disney has been putting out. The animation is excellent. The people and creatures move in more realistic fashion than in past animated movies.

I did have one grip. on the voyage to Atlantis, there are no fish. They are supposed to be in the Ocean, but there are no fish.

I think this will be a family hit. It has something for everyone. It is a true Disney adventure movie.
