"Get Love & Respect, with no special effects"; Xzibit is At the Speed of Life |
|||
|
Pros: Toughness & consciousness, X's flawless flow & delivery, great production, guests.
Cons: Couple of bits of spotty production, Hurricane G, one average track.
The Bottom Line: If you're going to pick up a Westcoast album, this is a fantastic place to start; deliberately avoiding cliche, At The Speed of Life gambles, and hits the jackpot.
Review: 1996 was a very underrated year for hip hip. Not only did Jay-Z, Ras Kass, Redman, 2Pac, Nas (plus a whole load of others who I cant remember right now) release great albums, but erstwhile Likwit Crew member and Westcoast heavyweight Xzibit ...

Pros: Xs rugged style flows beautifully. Mind blowing production. Street smart lyrics. Classic.
Cons: One of two weaker tracks. Not a lot.
The Bottom Line: Read the review
Review: In hip hop, the term selling out is a tag that many respected emcees have unfortunately had the misfortunate of being labelled with. Now over time many artists have been slapped with this undesirable tag, mainly due to the same reason. Commercialism. Now ...

Pros: Great Production, Intelligent Lyrics
Cons: "Hit & Run (Part II)" doesn't fit in..
Review: Xzibit's 1996 debut, "At The Speed of Life" came at a time when the majority of West Coast hip-hop artists were involved in gangsta rap. With roots in Detroit, his east-coast influence shows in the rugged realism of his lyrics, while...

At The Speed Of Life: More Proof That The West Coast Contains Many Hidden Talents |
|||
|
Pros: Great lyrics, good production, Xzibit's honesty and introspective nature.
Cons: Interludes, the obligatory posse cuts, one whack track, perhaps too short.
The Bottom Line: While it may suffer from some shortcomings, that's still not enough for me not to say that this LP definitely belongs in any true Hip-Hop head's collection.
Review: The West Coast Hip-Hop scene has been known for more than a decade as the section of the United Stat ...

Pros: Brilliant lyricism, outstanding production, conscious, no filter, not a lot of guests and raw.
Cons: Too many interludes, one awful track and bit repetitive.
The Bottom Line: Xzibit excels the competition creating a more than solid West Coast classic.
Review: Ive forever been a bigger supporter of East Coast hip hop than West. Now no matter how hard people try to convince me I frankly believe that East Coast artists produce more intellectual and listenable hip hop music than West Coast artists. However ...
