Not Only Arthritis!
Date of Review: Aug 5, 2000
I am an online fibromyalgia community support leader online. It is not a fun disease and for the most part there just isn't a lot of information out there. Luckily the people from the Arthritis Foundation have stepped forward and are not only helping people with FMS but also helping with research and supplying FMS patients with information on Fibromyalgia through their bi-monthly magazine, Arthritis Today.
The information they provide is wonderful! It is written in a way that the lay person can understand. They have had articles dealing with medications and what they are and how they will affect you. They have also talked about various other therapies such as chiropractics, massage therapy, diet, alternative therapies. They are non-judgemental and tell it like it is. If the treatment isn't one that a doctor prescribes but it works they are willing to give it the space that it deserves. Most important of all, they also aren't afraid to talk about the emotional pain that this disease brings. They have interviews with not only patients, but their families and doctors. Doctors have described how frustrating it is to have a patient that they can't just fix and the frustration goes to the family as well. Everyone's life changes when they end up with someone in the household dealing with this disease.
The articles have averaged 2-3 pages. Just the right size to read while waiting for an appointment or for the time to tell you that dinner is done.
The magazine is not pricey either. For $20 a year you not only receive the subscription to the magazine but you also are purchasing a membership to the Arthritis Foundation. This allows you to go to their support groups, use their swimming pools and much more. At twice the price it would be a bargain.
My only complaint is a simple one. There aren't enough issues a year! We want MORE! Fibromyalgia patients are in chronic pain every day of their lives. But at least now they can look forward to reading about the disease in this magazine. They can also rest easy knowing that as long as there is An Arthritis Foundation there will be research being done to help find a cure. I highly recommend anyone dealing with not only Arthritis but Fibromyalgia to get a subscription as fast as they can!
