Author's Review
This review contains big plot spoilers, so if that will bother you, please stop reading now.
Inadvertantly spoiling movies for people isn't my thing.
Jerome is a tortured artist of a sort. He has never had a girlfriend, his only friend is the fellow nerd at school, and they both got beat up daily.
Fast forward to his senior year of high school. Jerome still has never had a girlfriend, and has the same friend. He is not popular, and interacts with girls only by drawing thier portraits. A talented artist, he figures he'll go away to Stanford. The school catalouge portrays a beautiful building, and an even more beautiful girl as the model.
The school ends up being a dump. It's surrounded by run down buildings, drug dealers in the street, old cars, and lots of trash. The teachers are all artists who have never made it. They're still struggling to get that one big break, or become famous for finding the next big deal in the art world.
At the end of the semester, the person with the most talent in the eyes of all the profs. is given a showing at the local coffeehouse, where all the big artists get thier launch.
In the meantime, Jerome meets Audrey, the lovely model in the brochure. They become friends. The movie has other plot twists and substories going on, but it would be exhaustive to put it all here.
Basically the movie is about Jerome, how he develops, and his relationship with audrey.
The whole movie makes fun of every cliche' art student stereotype, and does a great job of it. If you've ever taken any art class, you will identify with the characters they portray. Even Jerome ends up being the cliche' of a jerk, because he becomes more brutal in the art critiques as his views on the school become more cynical. There's the guy who makes crappy drawings, and steals the spotlight for being "original." The actors and actresses really did a great job with those parts. I love how the art teachers are portrayed as well. They really act just like a lot of the real ones do. That slightly bitter jaded competitive streak, coupled with wanting to see others succeed in the same field.
The end of the movie might annoy some people, but I felt it fit the movie.
There is some nudity, since they do have nude models in the class. If that bothers you, you probably don't want to watch this movie. There is full frontal nudity of a man, and a girl is shown naked. Also, some people are murdered, there are some disturbing paintings that are shown, and the whole thing is very sarcastic.
All in all, I thought it was a well done film. The subplots are funny, sometimes dark, and sad at the same time. The characters are realisticly portrayed, as far as conveying the different cliche's. If dark satire isn't your cup of tea, you might want to see something else.
