Product Review

Many Functions & Small Size

by   rex10 ,   Apr 27, 2005

Pros:  Low price, high capacity, lots of features

Cons:  Buggy, inelegant implementation - not recommended for average users.

The Bottom Line:  Recommended for techno-savvy users who are comfortable tweaking software and settings. Lots of features for a low price. Not recommended for average users -it would be frustrating to use.

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

I bought the Gmini 220 because it combined two devices: MP3 jukebox and photo wallet. Neither of these items on its own compelled me to buy one, but combine the functions into one unit and I jumped on it. A $50 mail in rebate made the price attractive too, (well under $200 after rebate).
The short story on the review is: if you're looking for an iPod, buy one - this is not the same polished interface. As other reviewers have noted, the buttons are cheap and often take a couple of tries to work. The firmware and bundled software are both cludgey compared to iPod/iTunes. The unit crashes occasionally. The ARCBrowser feature is very useful but you have to update it from the computer using an old version of Musicmatch software.
If you are a techno geek you will probably still enjoy the device despite its flaws. One big advantage the Gmini has is that it simply shows up as a hard drive allowing you to manage files using explorer - a big plus. Another item to look into is the open source development of an alternate firmware called Rockbox. An effort is underway to port this OS to the Gmini. That OS seems to be very popular.
I also bought the FM remote and while it also has many features it is also similarly buggy in operation. Station presets seem to wipe themselves out every time the unit is turned on, etc. Also with the headphones I'm currently using you can hear the hard drive spin up and the LED display turn on and off through the headphones (this is ONLY with the FM remote attached).
