Author's Review
Update: Kudos to Archos, they have been updating the firmware since I originally bought the device last XMas. The latest updates include support for playlist synch from Windows, a web radio/TV plugin (for purchase), Flash 9 support in the web browser. This is now simply an amazing device, and works reasonably well. It is still not as elegant as the iPod touch-screen products, but much more flexible if you are just a little tech savvy.
The device works with Windows Media Player. Previously, the playlists from WMP would not work on the device after synchronization. That has been fixed now - creating a reasonable platform for managing your music on the go.
This player has a more "open" platform than the ipod and can play multiple video and audio formats. It can also surf the web using the Opera browser, now with Flash 9 support, so you can play all YouTube videos, not just the selected ones that have been converted to work with the iPhone. Most flash based music/internet radio sites also work, albeit sometimes slowly. Some sites, such as Hulu, don't work even with the Flash 9 player update - these seem to be site-specific problems.
It can connect to your home network wirelessly and play music, photos, and videos stored on your UPnP server.
Downloadable content is somewhat better now via the "Archos content portal." You can even play content while downloading - pretty impressive for a portable device.
I really enjoy the web radio/TV plug-in (extra purchase). While it is possible to enjoy the same features using the web browser, the plug-in makes the process much, much easier (uses vTuner listing of web radio and TV stations). I have the DVR dock attached to the home theater and can watch web TV or listen to internet radio in the living room easily. This is in addition to showing slides/videos from the UPnP server on the home network. Using the DVR dock I can also record tv and watch on the road later. You can even stream your TV out over the internet, slingbox-style (I have not bought this extra plug-in, though).
The video experience is great. Movies look and sound simply beautiful. The user interface looks very polished with the only minor glitch being that it is not always instantly responsive. I have the battery dock to extend the playing time and also to be able to download/backup photos and videos from my cameras while on the road.
"Plays for sure" is supported - I recently downloaded from Amazon unbox and loaded the portable file onto the player. Then using the battery dock, I watched the files at a friend's house on their TV - pretty cool. Video quality was acceptable - they only had a standard def TV.
The 30GB size has so far been quite workable for loading my music, several hours of video, and backing up photos and videos on the road.
I'm glad Archos updated and fixed the glitches with this device rather than releasing a new product. This is now an amazingly flexible media device and reasonably user-friendly.
