Porn in Disguise
Date of Review: Jun 7, 2000
I want to be an architect-- I have a passion for architecture. A love for it. I would marry it, but alas, such unions are only recognized in Vermont. That is why I subscribe to architectural digest. Ironically, that is also why I am not too crazy about it.
If you want it for the architecture, forget about it. There are better magazines out there... which I have not quite found yet... but... just the same... Architectural Digest DOES have beautiful photography of interior design, and occasionally outdoor shots of buildings. I love looking at the photos. But just the same, I wish there was more ARCHITECTURE in it, like the name would suggest.
There are many, many, many advertisements in it. I would think that that would lower the price of the magazine, but for some reason it is really expensive. If you want a cheap magazine, do not buy this one! The advertisements are sometimes nice to look at-- architecture buffs will like the furniture (sometimes antique) advertised in it. I actually read the advertisements more often than I read the articles sometimes. Okay, that is not true, but honestly, sometimes the advertisements, as annoying as they can be (HEY! Wheres the magazine? All I can find are ads!) are interesting to look at.
Which sort of summarizes why this is porn in disguise-- most people just buy it for the pictures. I actually read the articles. ;)
By the way-- this would make a great gift for architecture/ photography/ interior design buffs... not homeowners or gadget lovers.
Let me clarify, by the way, that the amazing photos make it worth it. For me, anyway. Despite the fact that there are so many advertisements and little architecture, the great photos are enough for me to love this magazines. And they always find the most interesting subjects to photograph!
If you want to redecorate your house, this is not the zine you are looking for-- try Better Homes and Gardens.
However, if you love photos, design, furniture, periods (as in historical periods), etc., this is it!
