Product Review

Smart bright monitor - But had dim warranty!

by   yellowswan ,   Dec 3, 2007

Pros:  Very high quality screen. Bright with excellent resolution, low pixelation.

Cons:  LCD not servicable if a problem occurs. Very limited warranty when these were new.

The Bottom Line:  Great LCD with excellent screen resolution! Easy on the eyes, easy to adjust. Nice one plug set up!

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I finally decided to retire my old heavy 17" CRT, replacing it with a gently used Apple 17" ADC M7649 flat screen LCD! Working in a college setting I had heard the IT department talk about the extremely limited warranty Apple applies to these units. And I'd seen broken ones in the trash heap as they could not be fixed as Apple does not supply any parts to repair them.

So, I decided to save money (considering Apple short term warranty policies) and purchase one used. The model I purchased as explained by the seller was fortunately under an Apple Care warranty when it had its screen failure, so I essentially have a new LCD in an older frame! My Apple 17" ADC M7649 works great with a very crisp (I run it at 1280 x 1024), bright screen with excellent resolution without pixelation. It is an excellent companion to my G4 Quicksilver.

It is a clear advantage to be able to power on and control my computer via the switch on the CPU. And the additional USB ports on the back are wonderful. And the fact that the monitor plugs right into the computer without the need for for another AC outlet is a plus! One less device to plug in!!

These are now old as technology goes, and you can find them fairly inexpensively online (don't pay over $100.00). They have been replaced with the more compact metal framed model. Just be mindful that if the LCD goes, you need to discard the unit. Repair would be beyond value.

Replacement plastic hinges and the like that can be purchased used however.
