Apollo 13

by   George_Chabot , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Apr 28, 2009
Pros: Story, Direction, Acting, Perseverance
Cons: Not more movies this good
The Bottom Line: A great reenactment of a potentially doomed mission that somehow came out all right. Well worth watching.
Review: Apollo 13 (1995) Apollo 13 is the moon shot that wasn't.  When Ron Howard decided to make the movie I had no idea why somebody would want to recognize the historical value of the Apollo space program. But after watching the ...

Resisting urge to say "Houston, we have a problem"...

by   captaind , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Dec 9, 2006
Pros: Great cast, script, directing, music, special effects...
Cons: ... ... ... really, not many at all...
The Bottom Line: Apollo 13 is an excellent film that avoids all the potential pitfalls of this kind of movie.
Review: Ever since I was a small child I’ve been fascinated by space and space travel, but somehow I’d managed not to see Apollo 13 until today. Various concerns about how this film about the ill-fated mission would be handled were in the back of ...

"We've just lost the moon."

by   alexdg1 ,  May 15, 2004
Pros: Fine acting, great directing, terrific score, out-of-this-world special effects.
Cons: I'm sure the nitpickers out there will pick out little "mistakes." Not me, though.
The Bottom Line: I have always been a space program buff, and I have to say that the film captures the spirit of the Apollo moon shots. A must-see movie, especially on DVD.
Review: It's hard to believe that over 30 years ago we lived in an era when American astronauts were not confined to flying in Earth orbit on the now-grounded Space Shuttle; from July 1969 to December 1972, 12 men walked upon the dusty, rocky surface of the ...

Apollo 13: "...Houston...we have a problem."

by   mkp51 ,  Oct 18, 2000
Pros: Superb film in every way!
Cons: None
The Bottom Line: A masterful dramatization of America's close call with tragedy in space
Review: "...Houston.. we have a problem." On April 13, 1970, a radio transmission containing these words crackled sharply back to earth from the tiny Apollo 13 spacecraft, which was carrying three men on a quarter-million mile journey to the ...

Perfect Nostalgia

by   dolphinboy ,  Apr 8, 2007
Pros: Script, acting, ambiance, details, direction, realism
Cons: Nothing.
The Bottom Line: Apollo 13 is a perfect example of a cinematic tribute to a memorable moment in history, and it has no flaws, in my eyes.
Review: The reality: Mission name: Apollo 13 Command module: Odyssey Lunar module: Aquarius Number of crew members: 3, named James A. Lovell, John L. Swigert, and Fred W. Haise. Launch pad: Kennedy Space Center, Florida Launch: April 11, 1970 ...

Apollo 13 (1995): The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress

by   Ed.Williamson , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Apr 28, 2007
Pros: Very realistic character portrayals.
Cons: The underlying optimism is inspiring, but may be seen by some as too much.
The Bottom Line: This is a classic film which will inspire almost everyone.
Review: The superb science fiction writer Robert A. Heinlein, who passed away in 1988, once write a novel, published in 1966, entitled The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress, which was not about a space flight to the moon, but rather about a revolt by colonists on ...

Heart-Stopping Every Time I See It!

by   lizf ,  Dec 17, 2000
Pros: Everything... this movie is perfect.
Cons: None
Review: When I was a child, my mom could never wake me up. Morning was always a struggle and my mom sometimes resorted to telling me lies to get me out of bed. I will never forget the morning she came into my room gave me a jiggle and whispered in hushed...

You can't get a stronger dose of adrenaline without a prescription!

by   Chad9976 ,  Jul 26, 2005
Pros: Great characters, accurate depiction of events, super suspenseful.
Cons: Sometimes a tad melodramatic.
The Bottom Line: One of the best thrillers ever made because it’s based on reality and IN reality.
Review: Apollo 13" seems more like an experiment in suspense rather than a movie, because it is so well crafted in every way that we care about everything that happens. This film is based on a true story, and although Hollywood has the tendency to exaggerate, ...

Failure is NOT an option

by   slhansen ,  Jun 8, 2000
Pros: Superb movie, very true to the real story
Cons: None
Review: Apollo 13 is a simply superb movie that masterfully tells the all-too-true story of three men and their desperate struggle to get back home from thousands of miles away - in space.

The movie starts with Jim Lovell (played by Tom Hanks) and his...

by   alexmant ,  Dec 12, 2000
Pros: everything
Cons: nothing
Review: Trapped 205,000 miles above the earth the astronauts of the Apollo 13 struggle to survive and make it home.
