Author's Review
Purchased at Wal Mart for the bargain price of 139.99 CAN, this piece of junk made it's way to my television set to play my favorite movie, Cruel Intentions.
Apex is similar to Hyundai. The save money by using cheap (illegal?) labor, and very cheap materials. I bought it mainly because of it's low price. I don't know why I trusted Apex, I never heard of this company before. I tend to only purchase reliable brands... Sony, JVC, Toshiba etc.
First of all, the main unit doesn't look good. it's too narrow and too deep. The facade is very ugly. Apex used push buttons that feel as if they were going to stay in your hands. Moreover, I had to put a book on the unit so it would tip over because it wasn't heavy enough.
I tried to plug my wires by reffering to the badly-translated owner's manual... (I've never seen so many mistakes in a sentence!). After everything was done, I pressed the ON button, crossing my fingers by hope that nothing would blow up. Bad News, the LCD display wasn't working properly. I didn't really mind because all I wanted it to do was to play my DVD. I was able to view my DVD, but I couldn't use the remote control because it would interfer with my television. (For example, pulling up the volume would result in my television screen turning off.)
After I watched my movie, I took out the disc, and put another one in. I pressed play, guess what? Bad News! The damn thing displayed an error message. I tried to play with it, I read the troubleshooting guide... nothing to do, the DVD player was broken. I brought it back to Wal Mart, and the clerk told me that these DVD players weren't worth much. Many customers brought them back for the same reasons. I decided to but another DVD player, but this time I was going to go with a reliable brand. I chose a Sanyo, and for 50$ more, I have a quality DVD player. I am very satisfied with it.
Don't waste your money. The extra 30, 40 or 50$ is well worth it. I think that Apex DVD players have nothing good to offer.

UPDATE!

After reading the comments members left on my epinion, I'd like to update my epinion with the following information (which also figures in the comments section).
I work at Future Shop in Canada (same company as Best Buy) and let me tell you that we get LOADS of Apex DVD players back. They are very cheaply built. Some customers are satisfied with their Apex because they happen to fall on the right one... but in the end, about one Apex out of 4 comes back to us. Totally unnacceptable when we only have maybe one out of twenty for the other, more popular, brands. (Toshiba, Sanyo).
In short, I keep my opinion on Apex products. Buying an Apex is like gambling. If you fall on the right one, it can work for years... and if you fall on the bad one (and chances are you will), either you will have to bring it back to the store or you will be stuck with a useless piece of garbage if the guarantee has ended.
In a few words: INVEST A FEW MORE BUCKS!
