Author's Review
If you liked 'Play' and think that is all Moby does, light jazz and blues with ambient undertones, this album will set you straight. This is NOT the well known 'Play' album from Moby, not even close. This album has rushes of anger, hints of ambient, with a punk backbone. This album shows that Moby can do almost any musical style. Some of the more haunting, and emotionally ripping songs are similar to and have a feel like 'Bauhaus' (from the 80s punk culture, 'Bella Lagosi's dead' is one of their more known songs) and 'Ziggy Stardust/David Bowie'. Other parts of this album have such an ambient feel that you can almost slip into a meditative state just before being ripped back to reality. The songs, laid out the way they are, give a since of life to this music. Peace and calm, then ripping change, happiness and harmony, to utter chaos.
With some screaming vocals, and subjects Moby has created a very influential album. Having his roots in punk Moby definitely shows it with this album. If you are going 'on faith', as it were, that Moby is going to stick with the same style of music that he did in 'Play' and 'Moby:Songs' you are in for a severe shock to your system.
With ripping guitar licks, smashing drumbeats, and planned feedback, this album is mostly punk in form. The first song on the album is very ambient in feel while the most of the album is wonderfully produced punk style. This album is a wonderful change; making Moby the only artist one really needs to own, because his music covers almost every genre it seems. He has ambient music, punk, jazz, blues, techno, industrial, rock, and in some ways rap. It's actually quite interesting to see someone that produces music the way most people listen to it.
Having such an open mind to style as most of us have to music. Purchasing not just one genre of music; however my collection goes from 'Beethoven' to 'They Might Giants' back to 'The Steve Miller Band' to 'Type-o-Negative' and back to 'Tori Amos'. It's such an interesting effect that Moby has a mastery of all these styles of music which makes him a must listen. I think, with the amount of music and varying style of music, anyone living in this world today could purchase at least ONE CD from Moby and love it.
