Couldn't finish it

This is one of those "artsy fartsy" films that you'll either love or hate. While the first reviewer is in the love category, I'm in the opposite. I'm one of the common folk who prefer the likes of Spiderman and Star Wars over excessively dramatic productions like Angels in America. Keep this mind during the review, you'll either agree wholeheartedly or think I'm an imbecile.

What makes a good movie that *I* find enjoyable?

LIKABLE CHARACTERS
Characters whose personalities are original, charismatic, funny, or clever help to draw me into a movie. If I like one or more of the characters, I'll start caring about them and therefore care about how the movie is going to turn out. To me, characters make a movie more than any special effects. In Angels in America there were some funny quips here and there, but not enough to make anyone really likable. Al Pacino's character is extremely pompous, self-centered and loud. His self-loathing underling is pathetic, overly anguished and whiney. The infected member of the gay couple comes close to being likable, but his scenes are too weird for my tastes. His tormented partner is a selfish "oh poor me" coward who is difficult to relate to. If I find all these main characters annoying, how am I supposed to care what happens to them next?

INTERESTING PLOT
A movie's plot doesn't have to be original to be interesting. Angels in America went for original, and forgot about the interesting. Ok, so there are these sick people, and the people around them can't deal with it, or have so many issues of their own that they don't have the mental capacity to deal with anything else. There's so much angst and pleading and "why can't you understand" that it's frustrating.

EASY TO FOLLOW
Probably the WORST part has got to be all the bizarro hallucinations. Yes they are often amusing, but completely pointless to me. Much like The Matrix, I hate movies where I have to sit there trying to figure what the hell is going on. How can I enjoy a film when I can't understand it? At least in The Matrix I only had a hard time wrapping my mind around the concept they were presenting. With this film it was like trying to interpret an LSD trip. Too surreal for me.

CONCLUSION
If you enjoy interpreting the movies you watch, then you will definitely adore Angels in America. Intellectuals and critics will get a kick out of the visuals and soliloquies. People like me who enjoy the more straighforwardness of mainstream movies will have a very difficult time "getting" Angels in America. I'll be honest: I didn't get it. My friends didn't get it either. What was the point the movie was trying to make? I don't know. Maybe it was in the second half, but I just couldn't bring myself to endure another 3 hours of torture.
