Author's Review
It seems like it's always good to rotate reading material, so there's only 1 magazine I take full time, then I toy around with others and when the subscription runs out we try something new. One magazine I decided to try out for my oldest was American Girl Magazine- I got a year's worth of bi-monthly issues for around $18 from their site.
Now, first off let me explain even though this is put out by American Girl, the one that makes American Girl Dolls, this is not about the dolls. I would recommend this magazine for girls ages 7-12. Once they are able to start reading fluently, this is a good magazine to start with.
One of my main concerns when getting a magazine for my child is the age appropriate-ness of it. Seems like this day and age there is no time to be a kid, especially with girls, it's all smootchy poo and teeny bopper quizzes that fill magazines today. But this is not like that- it is how to be a GIRL not a woman. It's all about young girls and it is age appropriate.
On the cover of the November/December issue, there's a really cute girl on there who's normal- no makeup and big fancy clothes, just a real cute outfit and possibly some lip gloss. These issues run 50 pages and there's no advertising.
The first part of the magazine shows homemade Christmas ornaments that girls have sent in. Later on in the magazine, there's a section where you can make your own Christmas gifts. One of the stories in there is about a girl who had learned all her parts for a play, then fell and broke her leg. The other story was really cute, it was about this set of twins (boy and girl) whose parents decided to take them to New York City for their birthday but it ended up snowing and cancelling their flight out, so they had New York at home by decorating their house like New York City.
As far as quizzes go, the quiz in this mag is about if you need to polish up your manners. No smootchy poo quizzes here. There's also member advice, Brainwaves, where you have to do all your errands in town without crossing your own path, Letters to AG, which included how readers give thanks, and where readers write in and tell how much they enjoyed previous articles, and there is also a little area where readers send in their own jokes. There's also a pull out poster and a mini magazine in here as well. There is a small cooking section as well and this month features how to make scented pals shaped like penguins.
Overall, this is a really good magazine- and my oldest read it from cover to cover and she read the whole thing in one night. I really wish though that it was delivered every month rather than every other month because she really likes the magazine and always asks where it is. Overall, I would recommend this- it is age appropriate but not boring whatsoever- I even enjoyed reading it myself and would for sure recommend it for girls 7-12 years old.
