Author's Review
Most of us average users "select" a monitor as part of a package deal containing monitor, CPU, and maybe speakers and/or a printer. We basically take what we are given and don't think much of it. Fortunately for Compaq users the MV520 monitor is both functional and simple to set up. The review is for the casual computer geek, not the expert.
Compaq has a nice plug and play feature- they color-code connectors to make set-up a snap, even for the cable impaired like me. As a long-time Mac fan, I was not very enthusiastic about the whole PC thing, but must admit it was far simpler than I expected. If you are color blind, it might take you 5 or 10 minutes longer-plugs are also symbol-keyed.
This is a 15" monitor with about 13.8" viewable area. It has 768 x 1024 resolution, a built-in microphone, and comes with JBL Pro powered speakers with headphone jack. (Note that this means another plug for your power strip- be sure your surge-protected power strip has enough plug-ins for all your peripherals and hopefully protection for your modem line as well.) Controls (bright/dim, demagnitizer, etc.) are very accessible on the lower border of the monitor- no doors to pry open, and large, visible icons for adjustments. The corporate description of this monitor raves about its wonderful "design" but it pretty much looks like, well...a monitor. There are a few curves in the plastic, but don't expect fine art.
The speakers are adequate, but not as "life-like" as advertised and the bass is not all that stunning, but certainly the sound is a bit better than built-in speakers usually deliver. Upgrading speakers is just a matter of plugging in something different after all. Volume control can be accomplished by the dial on the right speaker or from the Compaq sound control on the keyboard.
Color and clarity of picture are excellent, small details are sharp and crisp. The picture is stable and without distortion. Screen area is of course somewhat small, as it is in all monitors of this size. If you play many games, use your computer for graphics, or hate using a scroll bar, you may be happier with a larger monitor.
The plastic stand does rotate fairly easily but is fairly fragile. It also is fixed height so you must adjust desk, chair, or use a stand if needed for good ergonomics. Please be careful to place your monitor at eye level- back and neck problems from poor placement make computer use a lot less fun.
For "it came in the box," the MV520 is a decent, dependable monitor. You you need a monitor for a CPU you have, it is a good choice for a 15" model.I would suggest not paying the approx. $300 list price-check for demo models at the computer store, buy a refurbished unit from a Compaq warehouse store or watch for folks upgrading to larger screens who will sell you theirs for a song. If it came in the box, relax and enjoy your set-up with a reliable monitor.
