Author's Review
Alice by American McGee (the Quake level builder) is a tour'd'force of twisted imagery, and fantasic ambient music. While I was expect ex NIN Chris Vrenna's soundtrack to be the usual Industrial/Rock fare I was pleasantly suprised by the soft touch he's added to the game, staying with quiet ambient, 'spooky' background music that adds to the game. In many cases I find myself turning off music as it becomes as irritation - but not in this case.
Gameplay is in the Tomb Raider style, but with a more fluid feel to it. I personally never liked Tomb Raider, but once getting used to the run and jump style, found it very enjoyable indeed. Alice in her puffy sleeves, and long dress, 'trotting' along holding one of several truly nasty weapons makes a pleasant change to the usual action character in games today. For a barking mad loon, she's actually very likeable.
Weapons rangle from a bloody carving knife, to a deck of cards, all the way to a 'blunderbuss'. My personal favourite is still the crochet mallet shaped like a flamingo.
This is an entertaining game to play, and once of the best looking I've ever experienced. Running it under a 800mhz computer with 128meg RAM and a Hercules Prophet 64MX graphics card made the scenery spectacular, with everything running at 1024x740.
My only issue with the game is a minor one. With such amazing scenery it would have been nice to be able to explore it more. The way through the game is usually very well marked, and leaves little chance to explore the neighbourhood
