Product Review

Love it - Hate it - don't purchase it.

by   bmwguy6125 ,   Sep 22, 2006

Pros:  A very nice looking refrigerator. Cool french doors with innovative closing mechanism.

Cons:  poor manufacturing of the freezer door handle. poor documentation and communications.

The Bottom Line:  don't purchase due for the reasons stated in review. Sears service was pretty good though, they did try to fix it.

Overall Rating: 2/5 stars

Author's Review

I would laugh about this whole experience if it weren't so painful. On the plus side, my wife and I like the french doors, the innovative sealing mechnanism and especially the layout inside with the pull out trays. However, we are in process of taking Sears up on their replacement warrenty and I won't buy an Amana again.

The issue for us is that the freezer door handle flexes after about 5 openings of the lower compartment freezer door and then falls off. In addition, the information in the Amana database is incorrect for the technical serviceman so we kept getting the wrong parts. It took 4 visits by repair people (each different, each had to be retold the story). At the majic number of 4, if the problem cannot be fixed, Sears takes back the item which is what we requested.

While I liked the refrigerator in general, this experience turned me off to Amana for several reasons:
1. Faulty handle to begin with.
2. Incorrect documentation in their database on the handle replacement so that even though the repairman in good faith were ordering a new handle, the handle and clips were always incorrect.
3. The 4th repairman who came over told me that this was a known problem within Amana and they were working on a fix. Why didn't Amana communicate that to the other repairman and myself and I asked specifically about it.

All in all a very frustrating experience for me as I had to be home for four days to meet the repairman and we never got it fixed.

Sept 24,2006 - Update.
Based on the Advisor feedback (thanks), I'll speak more to the features and tell you what happened at Sears.
The features I like about the French doors are that for many items I want to remove from the refrigerator, the half door works fine (example, a soda). Because I'm only opening half the door, the door occupies less space in the room when open. As mentioned, I also like the meat/cheese tray. My old refigerater did not have this feature. Another nice feature of this particular model is that the trays on the inside of the door have spill liners. More on this later.

So, after 4 tech visits to replace the handles, Sears 'delivery' told me that I could get a replacement. However, I was told they don't manufacture this model anymore. So, they said go into the store and get something equivalent. At the store they clearly had these models on the floor and they told me that there was no problem in getting the original model. However, at this point, I did not want the same thing, as I could see that while the handles did seem slightly more solid on the models in the store, they still had a lot of flex. So, it got more interesting at that point. The associate brought me to the Kenmore equivalent. It was $50 more, but had an ice maker (which I did not need). The most interesting thing was that on the Kenmore model, they had metal handles that were fastened securely to the door via some allen bolts. The Kenmores are a more recent model than the Amanas. The differences are that the Kenmore cost $50 more, has an ice maker, has metal handles that are attached to the door by bolts, and the shelfs in the door do not have the liners.
After waiting 40 minutes, while Sears tried to figure out their own internal systems (sales, delivery, service, authorization for replacement) I finally got the 'next step' approved. If all goes according to plan, I will get a
White Kenmore Elite 24.8 cu. ft. TRIO® French Door Bottom Freezer Refrigerator Sears item #04676582000 Mfr. model #76582. This will have a stainless steel handle. Hopefully this will all work out.

As an aside, and after reading about some of the terrible experiences at HomeDepot, I have to say, that while Sears was pretty dysfunctional as a company, each individual part tried to help me best as possible. For example, the sales people were ready to do the replacement, but it took 40 minutes to get authorization and that only happened when I insisted a manager come over and move the process along.
good luck.
