Author's Review

I absolutely love this magazine. It is so frivolous and superficial, and makes absolutely no bones about being so acknowledged! There are several reasons why I love this magazine~

• This magazine has no articles with titles such as; “Why He Can’t Commit”, or “How to Drive Him Wild In Bed” or “Family Crisis”. This rag is strictly about looks. That’s it! Make-up, hair, clothes, body. Period.

• There is an annual readers poll that has become quite the status symbol for cosmetics companies. This poll is printed yearly, and gives readers’ opinions on beauty products. I am certain you have seen the sticker on some products which states, “Voted best shampoo by ALLURE readers.”

• Stories. The real life stories are about plastic surgery successes and disasters, living with anorexia/bulimia, being overweight and accepting it, being too thin and accepting it, the outrageous things people have done in the name of beauty or the lack of it. There are articles about facial deformities, body dysmorphic disorder, and how all of these things relate to self-image in our culture.

• The beauty advice is typically by artists like Kevyn Aucoin or Bobbi Brown. The photos of the makeup samples are great glossy color photos, and really help me to decide whether or not I feel like trudging off to Bloomie’s to check it out.

• The What’s Hot or What’s New section is fabulous, and I love to see what’s out there, and innovations in various products, gadgets and whatnot. I learned about Tweezerman tweezers from this magazine, as well as Kiehl’s silk groom, and Origins Starting Over.

• There is a section in the back of the magazine which tells you all the best spas to go to around the country. One month it might be the bet places to go for a manicure, or a haircut, or the best colorists around the country. There are the best one day spas, the best massages, the best facials, etc. Very interesting, and if you live near a major city, rather helpful.

• I keep all my issues as reference. It’s great to look up hairstyles, or make-up tricks, or home facials to try, hair masques to try, etc.

Allure is a magazine for women who like to be women, in that commercial, glitzy, gotta be me kind of way. Being that I adore makeup, and skin care products, and haircolor, and all that girly stuff, I really appreciate this magazine, and its purpose.

Allure is not here to make you a better person, or to save the world, however, it will help you decide if the risks of liposuction are worth it, and also help you to realize that if your nose is as big as the pre-op Cher, it’s okay. You are beautiful anyway. This is a great little magazine for those of you who are the slightest bit vain, and those of you who really, really aren’t. Most of all, it’s fun, and brings me back to the days when I would read Teen or YM, and try all those cool home made facial concoctions, or do a makeover on myself on a boring Saturday night. It’s definitely a girly companion, and an indulgence. But hey, I’m worth it.
