Product Review

Alcatel Speed Touch Home my modem of choice

by   mykel8 ,   Aug 19, 2002

Pros:  Reliable ADSL modem that delivers fast speeds

Cons:  It doesn't route, the LEDs can be bright at night

The Bottom Line:  It's a great modem that does just what it claims, provides a broadband feed into your home or small office and is efficient in the process. :)

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

I first met the Alcatel Speed Touch Home (STH) when I ordered Bellsouth Fast Access ADSL service. I originally had a USB ADSL modem but my router demanded an ethernet modem so Bellsouth sold me the STH. Since Bellsouth had already configured the modem to my needs, I basically connected it to the wall-jack, power outlet and router and I was good to go.

Once I started to navigate the web, I found that the modem delivered excellent throughput on downloads (1.4megabit down) and did not "crash or freeze" when 6 users were all navigating the web at the same time on one modem. In addition, this modem is fully compatible with bridged or pppoe connections.

Being a nerd, I wanted to get into its firmware and check out the features. Interfacing into this modem when it is connected to a LAN is not easy. You have to connect it directly to the machine you are configuring it with and then change some TCP/IP settings. Once I gained access, I found there was no reason to get in, unfortunately the modem doesn't do much for the user to play with unless you telnet in and access EXPERT mode (which is not advised by Bellsouth because you could "damage" the modem).

My only issues with this modem are that its 5 LEDs provide quite a light-show at night when you are trying to sleep (but you could always put a book in front of them). The 5 LEDs DO HOWEVER provide an excellent instant idea of which way traffic is going, line sync, lan activity etc.

Also, this is a DSL modem, not a router. It will not assign DHCP leases or maintain a pppoe connection- you need a router or software on your computer to handle that.

In the grand scheme of things though, it's a great, well put together unit that will serve you your broadband feed just fine.
