Mediocre RPG attempt
Pros:
Interesting battle and level up system, wide variety of characters
Cons:
Seems to be muddled in various areas, poor story
The Bottom Line:
This game is definitely worth a play, but you should steer clear if you like bright colorful environments, because this game is dark.

Author's Review
This was one of the few RPGs released for Nintendo 64, and with games like this, its no surprise it was overlooked by Squaresoft for a Final Fantasy. This game has broken controls in many areas, and trekking across the landscape gets boring after about 10 minutes. It takes far too long to get to any of the places you need to go, and more often than not, you get turned around because the landscape is so similar in every area, you'll end up taking longer to get where you need to go.
Of course, those things didn't doom the game, but they came close. The only things that make this game one of my favorites is the battle/level up system, which where both things you didn't come across often in games of that era (though it shared a similar battle system with Quest 64), and the wide variety of characters, keeping you from having a typical lineup.
The characters are colorful and have personalities of their own, each one having motivations of their own for joining the hero on his journey. From crazy Alchemists to bizarre Jesters, this game has them all, keeping things interesting. My only gripe is that you are given four slots, and no backup characters, so the four in your party are there until you kick one out. It would have been better if they had made backup slots for other characters, so you could have a more broad party of characters.
