Leonidas couldn't kill Xerxes, so I did it for him.
Pros:
-a classic -grabs your attention easily -I can't explain it, just very fun!
Cons:
-poor graphics -time consuming -villagers are...(for lack of a better word) stupid.
The Bottom Line:
A great classic that should be given the chance it deserves.

Author's Review
I remember playing this game with my cousin when I was really too young to understand the mechanics of it. When I saw this available for download over the Internet (because its impossible to find in stores now) I knew I had to. So I downloaded it and began playing. Immediately I became familiarized with those old controls and fell back in love.
Age of Empires (AoE) is a Real Time Strategy (RTS) from the late
9'0s.
You play as the guiding spirit to a civilization and advance your people from the Stone Age to the Iron Age while fighting off the other civilizations. I think I speak for most AoE and maybe most RTS players that playing on the "Random Map" mode provides the most enjoyment. On "Random Map" you can choose your civilization and what civilizations battle against you. Also the choice of how you can win the game (building a wonder, conquest, score etc.).
The game is very addicting and easy to pick up, if your not much of a key basher, then there is the option of clicking all comands. I'm a gamer that can look past graphics and look at play quality, and if you can do that too then I'm sure you can take something from this game for yourself.
I love that you can run things you way, this game has a little bit of history in it and I'm a little bit of a history buff and I am a leader at heart so leading my own empire was like...my destiny, and since I'm a few centuries late I had to go with doing it through a video game.
The downsides are few but still important. Even in campaign mode, this game requires hours of time to complete just one level. For graphic lovers, this game would be an epic fail. Your people are also slow moving and...short a few braincells (at times they cannot figure out how to go around something, which is frustrating when something that you needed built isn't build because your villager is pacing between two huts).
But since this game is now available for cheap (or free >.> <.<) online download, you should probably just give it a try. Its a good game that can entertain you on those lonely week nights.
