Author's Review
My son bought this game a couple of weeks ago with his Birthday money. At first I just watched a few times - looks interesting. Then I sat down and tried to help my youngest play. Then I got hooked! This game is VERY addicting. I always tell myself I'm only going to spend a 1/2 hour playing, and it always stretches to two hours.
The point of the game is to have your civilization squash the other one. Sounds simple. You can pick which of the great early civilizations to be, so now my son has learned a little about the Greeks, Romans, Hittites, and the different ages of man such as the tool and bronze age. You can play yourself against the computer, or you can play against other people. If you play against the computer, the computer can also give you an ally if you choose. There are lots of different set-ups that you can play, so the possibilities are almost limitless and you won't get bored playing the same thing over and over.
I am not particularly computer literate, or a great gamer. This is the first war simulation we've had in the house. I always set the difficulty level to beginner, and am challenged. I will be able to get a lot of playing out of this game because there are 3 different ability levels. When you first start the game, I'd recommend going through the different campaigns that the game has preprogrammed into it. These will help you learn your way around the game. If you play lots of these type games, you could probably skip this.
The game is rated for Teens, due to comic book violence. There is no blood shown; the characters do die, but its not any worse than in Zelda. I feel that this game is not too violent for preteens. There are no women in the game, so there is non of the sexist imagery seen in many of the games designed for teenage boys. (You do get a chance to sink Cleopatra's barge, but she's not visible.)
This is a great game that will see lots of use in our house, although I may not be reading as many epinions for a while. *Warning - this game is HIGHLY addicting!*
