Simply Put Game of the Year for 2003!
Date of Review: Feb 17, 2004
The Bottom Line: T.H.U.G is the game of the year because of it's hard work and effort so please PLAY THIS GAME!
I rented Tony Hawk's Underground at my local video store. I brought it home and played the free skate mode and did'nt find it that great, it was just like the previous TH games. But the free skate in T.H.U.G was a whole lot better because there were a lot more variety for instance jumping a bridge, grinding on toxic wasted rails and yes hitting pedestrians.
The above statements are absolutely nothing compared to the awesome and exciting story mode. First you create your character with an almost unlimited choice of cool designs, clothes, and options. Then after your done it shows you in your bedroom of your hometown in san fransisco where your fixing your not-so-awesome board while talking about your dream and goals to your very annoying and scared best friend. Your friend shows you around. The friend asks you to race him and beat his score points which are incredibly easy. Then you can skate, drive, or even walk around your hometown doing challenges and missions like grinding on a series of rails, and even doing street missions for the local gang. These missions are easy and will advance you into the next location of new incredibly cool missions where you can meet people like Tony Hawk and skate, drive, or walk around new locations doing even more exciting missions like in Tampa, Hawaii, Washington D.C. and Canada. The tricks and missions are hyping you up to become more famous, like escaping cops, breaking Jeb Bush signs, and meeting pro skaters who teach you new SPECIAL tricks like the 900, and the two board manual.
As you get further you get more popular and you have to do harder missions. But if you get far enough you can advance to a team like Zero, birdhouse, flip, girl and some other ones. You now have a team manager who expects you to do ridiculous but cool missions. The Manager gets photos of you doing a certain trick like doing a tailgrab of a 20 set flight of stairs, and transferring from one building to the other. Then he has you do some hard missions like escaping cops by hanging on the end of a caddy that a cop is driving. Then the manager rejects you forcing you to go solo and being able to create a totally cool board to fit you. There are so many choices to choose from, and the boards even get faded after grinding them so much.
There is a point in the game where you have to pick 5 pro skaters to be on your team. There are hard missions and jumps that one member from your team has to do. For instance you can have Tony Hawk complete the absolutely ridiculous buuilding to building transfer. There are about ten of these missions that the pro skater on your team can do. These missions took me about 4 and a half hours to beat. They are increbibly hard.
Then your friend from the beginning stole your tape of you jumping over a helicopter that you had to do earlier in one of my favorite locations Hawaii. So you have to hold on to the back of an eclipse looking car and jump over a bridge! Then after you do this you have to find the kid who stole your tape and race him through a series of rails and halpipes and such. This is incredibly hard. When you beat this the day is done.
I could go on and on about how the story mode is, but there is to much to tell. So take it from me buy this game. Whether your a gamer or someone who wants to have fun, Take it from me and please, please buy or rent or play this game!
