Captures the essense of hunting, which isn't necessarily a good thing....
Date of Review: Jul 9, 2006
The Bottom Line: It's not really very fun, but true hunting aficianados may have some fun with it.
Cabela's Dangerous Hunts is another hunting game, but one of the first ones that came out on the Xbox. And even though it feels like you are hunting, this isn't a good feeling.
Gameplay:
In Cabela's Dangerous Hunts, you walk around huge environments, trying to find the animal you are assigned to hunt. This gets extremely tedious because the game consists of aimless walking not knowing anywhere you are. Once you find your animal, the intensity factor slightly increases, but really never gets that high. The whole game really isn't very fun at all.
Being a game licensed from Cabela's, there is naturally a lot of weapons in this game that range from snipers, shotguns, Bows, and knifes. All of these guns are available from the start, you just have to have the money to purchase them.
An odd gameplay part to this game is the action camera; The action camera activates when an animal attacks you. It switches from its first person mode to a third person mode and then it shows the animal attacking you. It would have been better if they left this out because you can't shoot the animal fast when it goes to this view. Also, when you kill the animal it goes to another one of these views, even if there are other animals attacking you.
The three gameplay modes are:
Quick hunt: Just gives you a random hunt.
Action Zone: Lets you personalize your hunt.
Career: The career is what you are going to be most likely to play the most. It consists of a lot of different parts:
Challenge: A bunch of preselected challenges in different areas that have you do different challenges such as killing an animal within a certain radius. There are only 11 challenges and these are the main part of the game.
Charter: Charter your own hunt
A hunting guide: Gives you some tips and information.
Overall
The gameplay is lacking in fun and length. I really don't think that there is much of a need to play this, it is boring and annoying.
Graphics:
Graphics are pretty good for the xbox. Some of the close range models look great, especially the ground and some of the animals, but at a distance, sometimes the ground and the things on the ground get this wierd fuzziness to them. Overall a 7/10
Framerate:
The framerate is a little sloppy at times, especially when many animals are attacking at once.
Sound
The game sounds great, you can here different animals making there noises such as a woodpecker or a hog. The gunshots sound really great and so does basically everything else in the game.
Last words
This game really isn't that fun at all and I wouldn't recommend purchasing it unless you are a true hunting fan. Even if you are a true hunting fan I don't think you will get that much out of this game.
