Author's Review
This is the best Marvel superhero game on the market today. In fact, it is the most ground-breaking one since the X-men arcade game in the early 90's.
Judging by the cover, it seems to be a mish-mash of Marvel characters in some randomly composed storyline. However, the plot is actually coherent, yet still unpredictable. Of course, the one thing we all looked forward to was making up our own dream team. One of the toughest decisions arises when you find yourself forced to choose between your favourite characters. Luckily, you can change your team as you see fit during any stage of the game.
The biggest issue is that the Marvel universe is so vast with tonnes of characters, but the game has only included the limited amount of 23 playable characters. I found their selection to be balanced between some of the all-time classics and the new-age favourites.
The game is fun and easy. No two characters are alike, which adds diversity to your gameplay. You can go on a free-for-all and smash everything, or use tact and skill-- whatever is more fun for you.
Unlockables include characters, costumes (each with their own unique attributes), special powers and mini-games. This adds some replay value to this type of game. However, more effective in terms of replay is the ability to play with friends (they can join and leave at any stage) and the ability to play on-line. Kinda makes you wish there was a massive online version.
If you're a Marvel fan, this game is definitely for you. The only thing we can hope for is a second ultimate alliance game with even more characters.
