About Schmidt - Work Sucks, Then You Retire. And That Sucks Worse.

Date of Review:  Aug 1, 2003
The Bottom Line: You can save the Bottom Line for only 72 cents a day!
Review: Every time I see that a new movie starring Jack Nicholson is coming out I have the exact same reaction. I simply cannot believe that he'll be anyone but Jack Nicholson. How can someone with that kind of off screen presence and history do anything at...

About Schmidt is a gem of a movie.

Date of Review:  Jun 11, 2003
The Bottom Line: Excellent in every sense of the word. No Hollywood sugar coating, just the story of a man dealing with his life.
Review: To say that I loved About Schmidt would be an understatement. This is one of the best movies I have seen in ages. It probes emotions that everyone experiences everyday as we search for meaning in a world where so much of life feels meaningless. It...

Sigh, Eh . . .

Date of Review:  Feb 3, 2004
The Bottom Line: When Harold Schmidt loses his wife, he latches onto his daughter in a boring cross-country odyssey to get to her boring wedding. Man, this film drags!
Review: It's hard to muster a lot of enthusiasm for "About Schmidt;" and I am someone who enjoys a good depressing movie ("Brazil") or a mid-life crisis movie ("American Beauty"). The overriding problem is that the movie is about dull people, doing dull...

A Review About About Schmidt

Date of Review:  Feb 23, 2005
The Bottom Line: is a miserable old man.
Review: About Schmidt is surprisingly tense, given how subtle it is. During the film's climax, I felt my shoulders getting tight, and my jaw clenching. My eyes were fixed on the screen, waiting for Warren R. Schmidt's (Jack Nicholson) rapturous words...

About Schmidt - the trailer promises a comedy.

Date of Review:  Jan 28, 2004
The Bottom Line: Payne has some mishaps in his career, but this film, and prior gems ( "Election", "Citizen Ruth") should keep him in the public eye. Nicholson? He's a god.
Review: The movie defies definition. Is it a depressing comedy, or a dramatic coming of age film, with comedic touches?
One thing is for certain. You will LOVE it. Or, you will HATE it. I guess that's two things.

Pushed into retirement by the...

It takes a dedicated fan to stay awake.

Date of Review:  Jun 22, 2003
The Bottom Line: If you're looking for a movie to slow down your day, this is the one! Jack's fans will not be disappointed in his performance.
Review: Jack is Jack...acting doesn't get any better than that, but this movie is a little too slow for me, it actually put my husband to sleep. I hung in there, thinking the movie would pick up. The laughs are there, just spaced out. There is no action at...

Fine Work from All

Date of Review:  Apr 22, 2005
Review: It takes some depth of character to see the drama inherint in this story, so I'm not surprised that quite a few folks found it "boring" and "lacking in drama." Such is the state of the cinema going public. They made Vin Diesel a star, right? Watch...

About Schmidt is Far From Perfect

Date of Review:  Aug 5, 2003
The Bottom Line: A good film ruined by totally inappropriate language, nudity and some suggestive scenes. I rather liked the first half and hated the second.
Review: Everything I read about "About Schmidt" made me want to see it: bittersweet comedy about a sad, scared widower who goes on trip of rediscovery (I like stories about renewal), stars Jack Nickelson (a great actor), filmed in Nebraska (my home...

No One Said Retirement Was Fun

Date of Review:  Dec 19, 2004
The Bottom Line: About Schmidt is a comical tragedy about facing life after everything else has been done, that's funny and sad at the same time.
Review: About Schmidt is a comical tragedy that's depressing in itself, when it decides to look at retirement from a less than optimistic standpoint. As played by Jack Nicholson, Warren Schmidt is a freshly retired insurance executive whose about to enjoy...

About Schmidt

Date of Review:  Jul 5, 2007
The Bottom Line: This is one of the finest films of the year.
Review: "Relatively soon, I will die. Maybe in 20 years, maybe tomorrow, it doesn't matter. Once I am dead and everyone who knew me dies too, it will be as though I never existed. What difference has my life made to anyone. None that I can think of. None at...
