Author's Review
I don't want to boast and say I knew that they would do so well in America. But, I was hooked right away when I heard my first Coldplay single, Don't Panic, in Israel. My immediate attraction came from a combination of Israeli radio stations playing this song in 2001 every five minutes and the unique sound this band manages to make.
What really makes me stop and appreciate an artist's work is not the complicated musical inventions they can produce, and you could never accuse me of writing like a reviewer on Rolling Stone or Vibe magazine. I know what I like because it hits the very deepest part of me. I listen with my heart and my gut. If you are that type of listener, then you may agree that Coldplay is the type of band that touches the deepest roots of a person.
When first hearing Scientist I was amazed by how honest and chilling the song was. Coldplay's songs are so unbelievable because they feel like Chris Martin is speaking directly to the person to whom the song was intended. 'You don't know how lovely you are.' You know a song is good when you get goosebumps from the first two lines. Coldplay's WOW factor doesn't end there. The title song is equally wonderful. The chorus, where Martin belts out all his emotion, makes the listener, well, at least myself, feel as if s/he was brought to life in some way. I listened to that particular song on an extremely cold night (and there were a lot of them) this past winter in New York. A Rush of Blood to the Head managed to shock my heart and remind myself that there is something warm and good inside all the coldness and darkness around me. Another wonderful song on this album is 'Green Eyes.' If you're already feeling sentimental throughout the course of the day exercise caution while listening to this song. Towards the end of the song you find yourself wanting to sit down with the band and know what could inspire such incredible emotion in a three minute song.
If you are apprehensive about listening to their sophomore effort without hearing the first, Parachutes, I suggest you try the single, Sparks, before purchasing either album.
'did I drive you away?
I know what you'll say
you say oh, sing one you know'
Their raw and awe-inspiring sound comes from the simplest of lyrics and emotions. There is nothing more touching than genuine love and adoration. These are the emotions you come away with when listening to one of Coldplay's greats.
