Author's Review

My only question is what book can possibly follow up this book? For the past couple weeks this book has become part of my life. Even when I put the book down, I thought of Charlie Croker, his associates, their dilemmas and when would I have time to read more of it.

I was first introduced to Tom Wolfe in my Literary Journalism class. I was impressed with him there but I had no idea he was able to write both nonfiction and fiction. In the Wolfe story I read than, I was struck by Wolfe's commentary on sixties pop culture and how he was able to write it. A Man In Full is an interesting commentary of nineties culture of wealth, politics, religion and race.

As an aspiring writer, I was inspired by Wolfe's ability to write Southern Dialect in a style that is understandable, authentic, intriguing and I can hear them speaking in my head. He is also able to write various people's opinions and views. From one paragraph to the next paragraph he successfully wrote different people's thoughts describing the same situation.

To write the detailed descriptions and situations Wolfe writes, I think he had to visit a freezer warehouse, spend time in a prison and stood in the middle of the crowds of young black college students at Freaknic. The only concept that distanced me was rap music. His portrayal of rap made Wolfe sound like an old man.

A Man In Full is worth every cent of the $8.50. The book seems long with 787 pages but each and every page is invaluable.
