A Staggering Genius can be Heartbreaking Work

Date of Review:  May 11, 2000
Review: Copernicus was wrong: Earth and all the planets actually, as it turns out, revolve around Dave Eggers.

Now, let me warn you, this review is far longer than most of mine, so if you want to just skip ahead to about mid-way, that's when I get...

Dave Eggers Eloquently Staggers Toward Adulthood

Date of Review:  Feb 22, 2000
Review: When I initially posted this review in February, in was located in the "Mystery and Detective" section of the book category. This has since been corrected.

First, a clarification: Regardless of what the staff at Epinions would have one...

Over-rated masterpiece of Self-Obsession; check a library

Date of Review:  Dec 30, 2000
Review: I really wanted to like this book. I've read a lot of rave reviews on it, including the others here at Epinions, and I've had some friends read it who enjoyed it. So I checked it out at the library, and started reading it at about 5:00 AM on a...

It Was Staggering: Confessions From Dave's Jealous Friend

Date of Review:  Feb 28, 2000
Review: In the spirit of Dave's book, let me say straight up front that I am shamelessly trading on my personal acquaintance with the author to do two things: 1) draw some more attention to this review, and 2) make me look cooler by association. More...

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius: A Nearly Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius

Date of Review:  Jan 11, 2006
The Bottom Line: A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius showcases Dave Eggers' unique and extraordinary talent, but it needed an editor.
Review: When I saw the Michiko Kakutani quote on the cover of Dave Eggers' first novel praising it as "a virtuosic piece of writing" this and a "manic-depressive stew of a book" that, I knew it had to be worth picking up. I'm an avid reader of the New York...

Date of Review:  Mar 1, 2000
Review:

Posted April 30, 2000

This Epinion as well my others are on hiatus.

In the event Epinions gets up and running smoothly, it may return. It is hard to dedicate a meaningful chunk of your life only to find that your efforts...

A Powerful and Poignant Defense Against Grief

Date of Review:  Jan 6, 2001
The Bottom Line: This is an astonishingly intimate memoir of Eggers, orphaned in young adulthood and named guardian of his younger brother. I laughed, I cried, I thought, I sighed.
Review: Released in paperback February 2001.

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is the topsoil of a tragedy, the first layers of earth pushed aside in a painful personal excavation, where the treasure seems to remain deeply buried.

Mo' meta blues

Date of Review:  Feb 10, 2000
Review: After the Eggers bookreading in the City, I overheard one hipster savant say to another: "He even uses the same font as David Foster Wallace."

He was wrong, of course. Flip through "Infinite Jest" and look at the serifs on the G's. Compare...

A snarky tale of a man, his brother and death

Date of Review:  Apr 13, 2000
Review: The author of this epinion would like to make several points:

a)That he is copying the style of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius unabashedly.
b)That in doing so, he is only reinforcing the contrast between his sub-par writing...

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius: A Staggering Work of Heartbreaking Narcissism

Date of Review:  Aug 1, 2004
The Bottom Line: The Bottom Line thinks that Dave Eggers is a narcissist if this book is to be believed.
Review: Last summer, when I was on bedrest during my final pregnancy, three of my girlfriends got together and sent me a care package of books, magazines, and other fun things. One of the books, to my delight, was Dave Eggers' A Heartbreaking Work of...
