Who Ordered The Poo-Poo Platter?

Disney and Pixar definitely knew what they were doing when they created A Bug's Life. We've had this movie in our collection ever since it came out and my kids never get bored watching it. I'm kind of embarrassed to admit that I also enjoy it!

The star-studded voice cast is absolutely A+! You'll hear Phyllis Diller, Dave Foley, Brad Garrett, Madeline Kahn and Kevin Spacey just to name a few.

The story is about a colony of ants that have to collect food for the grasshoppers. Each scene takes you through the trials and tribulations of collecting, arranging and storing of the food.

One of the main characters, Flik, is an ant with a lot of determination. Flik has tons of non-traditional ideas and not everyone is so happy about them. He has a few clumsy episodes and ends up making a big mess for the colony. They have a "council meeting" (so to speak) and it's decided that Flik needs to leave the colony. I don't want to give any of the story away, for those of you that haven't seen it, but he ends up going on a journey to find bigger and better bugs to help fight off the grasshoppers.

Flik ends up taking off with the support of Dot, a tiny ant that hasn't reached maturity yet. She thinks Flik is "all that and a bag of donuts!" Through the movie you'll go with Flik to places not so nice. He eventually shows up at P.T. Flea's Circus and that's where he meets his new friends. After lots of talking and begging his new friends agree to come back to his colony with him. The only problem is that Flik doesn't understand that they are circus performers and they don't understand that he's looking for bigger bugs to help fight off the grasshoppers.

What do I like about the movie?
The movie is very entertaining. I like the lessons of having self-esteem and determination. My kids have watched this many, many times and still comment on how other peoples actions hurt feelings. They'll say, "Hopper's a mean grasshopper! He's not gonna have any friends if he don't be nice." There are things too numerous to mention to that I like about this movie! I couldn't possibly name them all here.

What do I dislike about the movie?
There are several attempts at humor that are more suited for the adults. Frances is the Lady Bug but he's quick to let you know that not all Lady Bugs are female. Personally I feel that's an issue that kids aren't going to understand. I want my kids to accept people for who they are, not what color or sex they are. One of the main phrases that gets repeated at my house is, "Who ordered the poo-poo platter?" This comment is heard while Flik and his friends are at a "bar" talking about their next plan of action. My kids think this is the single most hilarious thing they've ever heard. I'm not so sure.

This movie runs about 95 minutes. There are 2 special bonus cartoons included, although I'm not sure why, they aren't anything spectacular. The first one is Geri's Game and it's about an old man that plays chess by himself. The other one is an exclusive sneak peek of Tarzan.
