Features
This surge protector can accommodate seven non-transformer block, standard three-prong plugs. It is available with or without telephone/data line protection, and is available in several different sizes depending on the number of devices you need to protect. An ON/OFF switch terminates and connects power to connected equipment. A "protection working" light indicates that the unit is operating properly, and a "site wiring fault" light indicates when the unit is not properly grounded or other problems with wiring in the building in which it is connected. A button on the side of the unit resets the internal circuit breaker in the event of overload. This model comes with a $50,000 lifetime equipment protection policy. Essentially, this policy provides for replacement of damaged equipment connected to the surge protector, should the surge protector fail.
This model comes with a very well-shielded cord that is approximately 5.5 feet in length. The included instruction manual is easy to read and provides the basic information necessary for understanding how this model works. Customer support contact information and warranty information are also included.

Performance
The best test of a surge protector is not just how big of a surge it can safely handle, but also fast it responds, how it responds to subsequent surges, and how well it stops smaller spikes. Indeed, there have been several studies that indicate the cumulative effect of smaller spikes over times causes more data loss and damage than large surges. The audio and video equipment I've had connected to the APC Surge Arrest Personal has worked for many years without a single problem. When a big surge did come during a thunderstorm, I knew the big test had come. A brilliant flash followed by nearly instantaneous thunder told me it had hit close. I heard the alarm go off on my
APC Back UPS Office 500. After making sure my computer was okay, I checked both of my Surge Arrest Personals protecting my A/V equipment. The "protection working" lights had turned off on both of them. I assumed they had both been damaged by a surge, and I wondered if the equipment connected to them had also been damaged. I turned on the television, receiver, dvd player, and cable box. It was my pleasure to find that everything was working perfectly. I then checked the instruction manual that came with the surge protector which stated, "in the event of a sustained, high energy surge (such as a lightning strike), this indicator will switch off. Return the unit to APC for repair or replacement."
Customer Support
Even the Surge Arrest Personal comes with a lifetime warranty. I called APC customer support and explained what happened. The very friendly representative briefly consulted with tech support and they quickly came to the same conclusion that I did - the surge had damaged both of the units and the "protection working" lights were out to indicate just this. She took my name and address and two free replacement units arrived in about a week, along with postage-paid return packages for the purpose of sending the damaged units to APC for further analysis. Definitely one of the better customer service experiences I've had.
Conclusions
This is a reliable surge protector with good plug capacity in a nicely designed, easy-to-use package. For its price, I don't think you can beat it. The APC Personal series of surge protectors isn't the best for computers and other highly sensitive electronics, unless you only have cheap hardware store surge protectors available. Otherwise, for a few dollars more, step up to the
APC Performance series, which has similar features and design but better surge protection.
