Product Review

Nice surge protector...APC makes quality stuff.

by   oneballjaywax ,   Jan 5, 2005

Pros:  Good quality,nice extras,outlet spacing

Cons:  Outlets a little tight need to wiggle to get in

The Bottom Line:  Look at these instead of some lower (but expensive) model Monster cable protectors.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

Well a few years back got an earlier model APC surge protector (actually got 2) and both have served me well and I am still using them.Back in August bought on of these models along with 3 other ones w/o Ethernet. The 3 w/o Ethernet were for my 2 computers and 1 for the tv.The one with Ethernet was for out in the garage where my router and cable modem sit and supply a connection to the rest of the house (wired it myself with CAT5e).
One thing i really like about the packages is the extras you get with it.A coaxial cable a phone cable and a CAT5 cable come with this model.Thats pretty nice considering some companies don't even give you a phone cord with their surge protector.
The cord on the units is also overkill which can actually be a good thing. The cord has to be at least 8ft. which can be nice when you are stretching it to an outlet...mine I have wrapped up with twist ties keeping it all together. Some of the outlets are spaced so you can plug items with large transformers into the strip w/o taking up to plugs for one item.
The unit also has to small holes on the back which allows you to mount the unit to the wall or any other object with holes (actually have one attached to a perforated metal back on one computer desk). The unit has a sliding plastic bracket that can be used to keep the wires organized and point them in a downward direction from the unit..keeps it looking clean.
The APC surge protector black in color which I actually find a good thing..my two old ones were white and could not really come clean after that many years. On one of the 3 other models I bought the switch would not work...in other words the thing would not shut off...seemed to correct itself though now it works fine.
The only other problem I really find from this unit are the plug flap or covers. Each plug has a small plastic flap inside the plug that is pushed away when the plug is inserted. This does take some work.Don't force the plug straight down or you will snap the plastic dealies off..start at a little angle and wiggle in a little then push the plug all the way into the strip.
Not too much I can say..it's a good brand that I have dealings with in the past thats why I went for them this time around.I would recommend this item to anyone looking for some surge protection.
Just one more quick side note: You can determine by the model number how many plugs the surge protector has.For example: model PF11VNT3 has 11 outlets.
