The Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 G ED-IF AF-S DX lives up to all of its letters.

by   jvandegr , top reviewer in Electronics at Epinions.com ,  Mar 27, 2006
Pros: Fast focus, very good optical quality, useful zoom range, compact, low weight, affordable.
Cons: Zoom lens movement is not smooth, some vignetting at large apertures.
The Bottom Line: Easy to recommend for its great price-to-performance ratio. Very good optical quality, fast focus, good build quality, and a useful zoom range. Much better than the average "kit" zoom lens.
Review: Introduction A "kit" in the camera world is a camera body and a lens (usually a zoom). Any pro photographer knows to stay away from kits. Why? Because the vast majority of lenses included with kits are sub-par performers. In the 1990's, a ...

a "kit lens" or the real deal?

by   uniq , top reviewer in Electronics at Epinions.com ,  Mar 19, 2005
Pros: All the "pro" level OPTICAL features, fantastic price/performance ratio
Cons: 67mm filter size, plastic construction, variable aperture, DX designation, focus ring in BACK?
The Bottom Line: it is a great companion to the D70 and ideally suited to those users who are looking for great optical performance but aren't rich.
Review: I just recently picked up a D70 to compliment my Nikon film gear and I decided to get the complete D70 kit, which included the 18-70mm Nikkor DX lens. This was mainly because all my film lenses would suffer from the 1.5 x focal length multiplier imposed ...

Great walkaround but watch your wallet

by   tomstainer ,  Jan 28, 2005
Pros: quick and quiet autofocus, professional build, Nikon badge, relatively cheap for brand lens, ideal walkaround
Cons: pricey compared to similar generic manufacturers
The Bottom Line: Make sure it is bundled with the camera and get yourself a great lens.
Review: This lens may come as one of the "kit lens" options with the Nikon D70, but it's far from a starter lens and delivers in spades for all but the most exacting photographer. With a zoom range between the wide 18mm and the telephoto 70mm, it provides an ...

Much more than a "kit lens"

by   sailingshot ,  May 16, 2005
Pros: Does everything well at half the expected cost.
Cons: It's not free!
Review: This is often called the "kit lens" as it is packaged with the D70. It often sells for 300.00 US or less. It features a ultra fast AFS Nikon focus system and is a joy to use. It is for digital cameras ONLY and has no F/stop ring. This lens operates ...

Can a "Kit" Lens Be Any Good?

by   colonialpara , top reviewer in Electronics at Epinions.com ,  Apr 27, 2007
Pros: Excellent optics, price to performance winner, a great mid-range zoom.
Cons: Less than pro build quality, variable aperture, vignetting is present.
The Bottom Line: A great performer, especially at its price point.
Review: INTRODUCTION The Nikkor 18-70mm AF-S ED f3.5-4.5G IF DX zoom lens is one of those lenses from Nikon that first appeared about the time that the company introduced its first sub-$1,000 U.S. digital SLR, the Nikon D70 to the camera shooting ...

Superb performer for a ridiculously low price

by   mimoid ,  Jul 3, 2005
Pros: Sharp, useful zoom range, great color rendition, ridiculously cheap
Cons: Vignettes at 18 mm, variable aperture, a bit slow (aperture-wise)
The Bottom Line: Even for twice the price, the lens would still be incredibly good value for the money.
Review: Background information This lens was developed to be bundled together with the Nikon D70, hence the informal name "the D70 kit lens". When I bought my D70, the price difference between purchasing the D70 kit together with the bundled lens and ...

What can I say, It came with the D200...

by   h2c911sc ,  Mar 14, 2006
Pros: It came with the D200 kit so you don't outwardly pay for it
Cons: Polycarbonate construction, light weight, questionable longevity in daily use. Dang lens hood keeps falling off
The Bottom Line: It came with the D200 kit,use and enjoy it. Being my first zoom, I'll take it with me on vacation but I'll use my prime lenses for the $$$$$ shots.
Review: What can I say about the Nikon 18-70mm f3.5-4.5G ED-IF-S DX lens, it came packaged with the D200. If you're reading this review, you may be a D200 kit owner like myself. I won't get into the technical description too much on this as the earlier ...
