I'm committed to my Dell Dimension 8400. I've had it for more than 4 years now, and it seems like it can keep going for a while longer. It meets my needs for composing music and backgrounds for myself and my students and storing my music and financial records.
I have a lot of external devices, all of which connect through USB connections. Most Important are my 5 (count ‘em - 5) external hard drives, which I use for 3 copies of my recorded music files. Then, I have a Blackberry Storm connector, printer, scanner, digital camera connection, backup battery, card reader and lots of other things.
I've seen the need to have 2 D-Link 7-port USB hubs and those worked ok until one of them failed, a common trait for me among D-link products, which work well for a while and then fail out of warranty. So, when the ;attest one fai;ed, I was looking for a replacement USB2 hub that I could depend on.
A net search identified this product, the Cyberpower CPH720 USB2 hub. The price was under $28 from Amazon. It provided 7 ports processing at the higher UDB2 speed and was powered with a power supply. Another nice feature was the lifetime warranty. If it fails under normal use, all I have to do is send it to the vendor at my expense.
I really liked the design because it was a mini-tower as opposed to a flat unit like the D-Link, thus permitting me to put it on my desktop without much loss of space. In use, the footprint on the desk is about 1 inch by 2 inches.
The unit was immediately recognized as plug and play right out of the box. I connected the power supply and connected the upstream port. I then connected the downstream posts and all of them worked.
The unit shows that it is working through LED lights. 6 ports are on the sides, 3 on each side, plus a port in front that can be used for a flash drive or any other USB2 device. I have 3 of my hard drives connecting this, plus the scanner, printer, wireless mouse and Blackberry Storm connection. It handles it all with no problem whatsoever.
Having it on the desktop has helped cable management and led to a cleaner desktop.
This does power using bus power and outputs up to 5 volts and 500mA per port. It will work with any operating system that will support a USB port, which would include Windows 98 and forward as well as MacOS 9.x and forward.
