Product Review

Worked well, but leaked.

by   microman33 ,   Aug 17, 2005

Pros:  Lightweight, inexpensive, irons well, ergonomic for the hands.

Cons:  Water leaked

The Bottom Line:  This iron was attractive and looked like good value for the money. It ironed well, but the water tank started to leak. Took it back for a refund. Don't recommend.

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

We bought the Sunbeam 4214 at Walmart for about $25 based on the Epinion review. It is nicely styled and felt good to hold. The controls looked well designed that might hold up for a while. The water fill cover also looked substantial and probably would not break with continual use.

My wife used it after our expensive, but lousy Rowenta died. The Sunbeam did a nice job of ironing and was not overly heavy. Well, it looks like I can write a positive review,I said to her. Let's give it a few more uses first, she replied. Sure enough, the water tank started to leak during her fourth use, dripping on the articles to be ironed slowly, but continuously. Oh, darn, said my sweet wife, another piece of (not a word I want to type here).

She took it back to Walmart and they were nice enough to provide a refund. She is shopping for yet another iron.

Maybe we got a lemon. I can't say they all will leak without trying lots of Sunbeams, but this one did. I see that is a common theme in many of the reviews of irons. Seems like the engineers and designers of today could get this right. I am certainly willing to pay a little more for something if I know it will work and last for years. That was my thought with the Rowenta, but that one was not worth what we paid either.

Update: This epinion has been rated as Somewhat Helpful when my epinions usually are Helpful or Very Helpful. We did not own this iron long enough to have a real in depth experience. I apologize for that. Shopping for a replacement we looked at many brands and models of irons and ended up with another Sunbeam (Model 3964) which is smaller and lighter than the 4214. We will use it for a while and then I will write about that one. All other irons were too heavy or had flimsy controls or were too expensive for what you get. We have had a Rowenta and decided it was not much better than less expensive irons - that one failed too. Maybe we are under an iron curse because so many have gone bad, or else they are not being built all that well. Soon I will tell you about our experience with the Sunbeam 3964.
