Author's Review
I bought the Yaris, sight unseen, I never took a test drive, I merely went to a local dealership, sat in the various models, looked in disgust at the add ons and mark-ups from the dealer, and then went to the credit union and had the car delivered to my driveway.
I figured, at the price, the car would be chintzy like the tercel I had many years ago, but my only concern was to not dump endless amounts of money into the coffers of the purveyors of petrol.
I ordered the car with all the niceties that I think make driving more pleasurable, and less taxing-automatic tranny, power windows, mirrors, and door locks, and of course anit lock brakes.
Before I made the decision, I also researched the safety ratings of the crash tests, and was satisfied that it is as safe as any SUV (plus, I know this car is definitely less liable to roll-overs- the SUVs dirty little safety secret!).
Well surprise surprise surprise!!!!
The car is not chintzy at all!
Their is less road noise than the Camry, which makes the underpowered audio system actually audible under all driving conditions encountered so far.
The cruise control? Works better than the US auto makers cruise controls, because Toyota, sets the lower limit for it to engage at about 22MPH. (Typical US autos do not set lower than 30MPH).
The instrument cluster (I have the more informative one with the Tach) is in the center, but it became intuitive rather quickly.
The car has tight steering (unusual for a Toyota) that is more like a German car than any Toyota I have ever owned or driven.
And the fuel economy?
I am laughing all the way to the bank.
The way I figured it, I would either be spending the money at the pump, or spending it on a car that gets better economy. If I did not purchase this car, all I would have to show for my money in my commuting costs, would be a stack of gas station receipts!.
The sedan, was the only choice, as the styling is so well done proportionally, that the car does not really 'look' small.
The hatchback, I thought, looked like a roller skate with a motor, so I did not even consider it for more than a few seconds.
So far, I have nothing but adoration for this car. The a/c blows tons of cold air, the ride is smooth and comfortable, and well, I just love it.
When I first bought the car, every one at work was mocking me (I bought it before the recent run up in gas prices, because I knew from research that the run up was coming), because I work in construction, and all the other guys drive big honkin' crew cab trucks, or lifted up trucks with big tires etc.
Well, now, they are all looking at my car in jealousy, acknowledging that they can not afford to fill the tank on their gas guzzlers!
So far, one other guy dumped the big truck, and bought a Yaris, and most the other guys are looking!!!
