Product Review

'06 Base Grand Prix

by   ekonk ,   Jun 19, 2006

Pros:  Decent power and fuel economy, comfortable ride, nice front seats

Cons:  Numb steering/handling, awkward backseat entry due to roof slope

The Bottom Line:  Solid car with good power, fuel economy, and space. Rear seat entry is a bit awkward, but manageable. Has a sporty image but drives like a family car.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

Good car overall. Mine has the 200 hp 3.8L V6 mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. This offers good acceleration and decent fuel mileage (I get about 25 mpg under mixed city/highway conditions).

The car has a sporty feel to it but rides and handles more like a family sedan. Seating is comfortable (particularly the front buckets), though head and leg room is limited in the back seat. The roof slopes down quickly over the back seat, making it a bit difficult to get a young child in a car seat without bumping either your head or the child's until you get used to it.

Storage space is good, there is plenty of room in the trunk and the back seats fold down (split 60/40). I have the optional fold-down front passenger seat as well, which is great when you need to transport something long, or if you need a surface to work on (changing table, laptop stand, etc.).

I have over 12k miles on mine at this point, and the only problem I have had (other than some damage from a windstorm) is when I first picked up the car. The on-board computer display (which shows the odometer, compass, temperature, and other features)was malfunctioning and needed to be replaced. This required a trip to the dealer and a 45 minute wait, but was fixed under warranty with no issues or cost to me. Otherwise the car has been flawless.
