A lot of car for the money
Date of Review: Dec 27, 2005
The Bottom Line: Now that some of the hype has blown over, you can buy one for a fair price. Go for it!
If you're in the market for a V8-powered, rear-drive musclecar, the Mustang GT is a great way to go. I looked at the new GTO (bland styling) and the Charger (no manual transmission), but with it's updated retro styling, 5-speed, and roomy interior, the Mustang won hands-down.
The car has that great V8 burble, handles well, runs well, and is instantly identifiable as a Mustang. Whereas if you removed the GTO and Charger badging from those cars, you might not know what they were. The Mustang is so identifiable that there is no Mustang badging on the car. The roomy interior is a big plus for me, since at 6'4" tall, I've not been able to fit in previous generation Mustangs. But I've got headroom to spare in this generation, although leg room is on the borderline.
In the month I've owned the car, the only negatives I've found are a notchy shift feel and an occasional clunking from the suspension. I even replaced the factory shifter with a Hurst unit, but it still feels overly notchy. But that's a minor annoyance in what is overall a very tight and comfortable car. The ride is a little choppy, but that's to be expected in a car of this nature with a traditional rear axle setup.
All of those little annoyances are soon forgotten when you sit in the '67 look-alike interior, fire up the V8, notch the transmission into first gear, and take off. As you look out over the long hood, it's like being back in high school, and you can't help grinning from ear to ear. The Mustang is about as much fun as you can have on 4 wheels for under 30 grand.
