The Bottom Line:
Until they build a truck that gets 26 MPG then a nice sporty car that does will do the trick.

I just purchased a 2006 Ford Mustang with Pony package and 5 speed. It is also a "Stampede" edition which is basically just a different emblem on back and badge on interior - but only 500 made.
I was interested in something with good gas mileage, good looks, and reasonably priced. I considered the Mini Cooper but thought with my six foot, 200 lb. body that I would look like a clown driving it. I also considered a used BMW 3 series but would still be looking at spending a little more then I wanted.
I came across this black Mustang with two wide silver stripes down the middle and had to take a look. I was surprised that it looked as cool on the inside as it did on the outside. Mine has black leather seats and chrome accents that look good on the dash. I also like the chrome mustang plaque on the door sills. Overall I would give the interior a thumbs up and disagree with comments I have read about it looking cheap.
I was surprised when I first fired it up that it had a nice subtle growl. Not a V8 but a nice sound for a V6. I knew the 4.0L is a carry over engine from the Explorer and had been around for a while. I also figured this to be plenty of engine for this car. It is rated at 210 HP. Taking it for a spin was FUN to sum it up in one word. It's not the best short throw shifter I have ever used but it's good enough if you know how to drive a stick - and I do. It moves quickly and feels like a sports car should. I should mention that I test drove a Nissan 350Z right before this mustang and I felt no difference in speed or fun factor.
Other nice touches were the ergonomics of the controls. The shifter, radio, A/C, and other switches were all within easy reach without leaning into them.
A special fun and great conversation / show off item is the dash lights which can be changed to 5 different colors and programmed for over 100 colors.
Also nice is the computer on the dash for gas mileage and mechanical / electrical system checks.
The front seats have plenty of room and most of the time I have them inched up a bit so I can fully depress the clutch pedal. The rear seats are cozy once you twist yourself to get back there. Someone shorter then 5' 8" should be OK with the leg room.
The stereo is the 500 watt "Shaker" system and it is possibly the best stereo I have ever owned in a vehicle - especially stock. Not only loud - if that's your thing - but also low distortion and good definition across the range of vocals and instruments.
Back to my main reason for buying - 27 MPG on highway. Not bad for a sports car! The gas miser turns heads! Can't say that about a Honda or Toyota - good job Ford!
