I purchased a 2005 Mazda rx8 about a month ago. It was purchased from a friend of the family and had about 41,175 miles on it. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL CAR! The inside and outside style is beautiful, it has a great sound system, great ride, I LOVE the car.
BUT, I think all owners or possible owners of this car should know about the rotary engine and how NOT to flood it. WARM IT UP!!!!!Everytime you turn the engine on, the car puts gas and oil into the rotary engine. If you do not leave the car on long enough for the car to burn off the gas and oil, the next time you turn the car on it will put more gas and oil into the rotary engine and it will flood. It does not matter if you wait 4 minutes, 4 hours, 4 days or 4 weeks....The car will not start because you will have flooded the engine. There is a way to dechoke the engine and it explains this in the book and in the dvd that came with the car, but that did not work for me. All that did was help kill the battery. Now I had to have it towed to the dealer and they had to replace the battery, spark plugs, coils. LUCKLY the car is covered for this up to 50,000 miles under warranty. Unfortunetly for me, the car is now up to almost 45,000 miles. I recommend getting the extended warrany. It will cost about 1,500 a year, but it should be worth it because if I do flood it again, it costs generally $800.00 each time to fix. I flooded the engine one time... hopefully never again! I moved it from the street to the drive way and that didnt let the engine warm up. Which meant the gas and oil never burned off.
Furthermore, this car requires you to add 5w-20 motor oil very frequently, there is no problems, but the rotary engine requires much oil.
